For those Iowa students that know much about the DRA scholarship...is this research going to take up pretty much all my free time??? The committment of 10 hours a week seems a bit much. I know that they said you can make it up during break periods but does that mean your breaks are taken up with research too?? Any info would be greatly appreciated. I don't mind doing research by any means, ecspecially for that kind of money, but I dont want to spend all my free time for the next 4 years in the lab!

It all depends on your mentor and your project- your first year you'll spend deciding on what your research will be and who you'll work with- I have some classmates that put in time each and every week and some that don't do anything during the school year and only work during the summer- all depends on your type of project and if your mentor is flexible enough with the schedule! The best way to do it is to jump on a project that you can do within a few weeks during the summer and then use time during the semester to write up abstracts, proposals, presentations, etc. which you could easily do on weekends or something. it really shouldn't take up all your free time as it may seem, and a lot of mentors understand that during the school year your school work should come first!
