The University of Miami / Jackson Memorial Hospital Health System has two newly approved, ACGME accredited IR Fellowship openings for the year 2021 – 2022, starting July 2021. These positions are open to ESIR (1 year) and non ESIR independent residency (2 years) candidates.

The Interventional Radiology residency at Jackson Memorial Hospital/University of Miami places a strong emphasis on clinical care and procedural training. The program offers excellent training in the full spectrum of vascular and non-vascular procedures in a high-volume setting with emphasis on clinical IR training.

Trainees rotate at multiple locations. Jackson Memorial Hospital is a busy 1500-bed tertiary care hospital housing a level 1 trauma center, Miami Transplant Institute with one of the highest volume transplant services in the U.S., and Holtz Children’s hospital. Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center is an NCI designated cancer center. Trainees also rotate at the University of Miami Hospital, the Miami Veteran affairs hospitals and outpatient centers with associated clinics. Trainees are therefore exposed to the full spectrum of interventional procedures such as high end trauma interventions, complex transplant hepatobiliary interventions, complex Interventional Oncology interventions, Peripheral arterial disease interventions, Men’s Health (Prostate Artery embolization, one of the highest volumes in the country), Women’s health, pediatric interventions and other general interventional radiology procedures.

The department itself is one of two stand-alone IR departments in the US. The clinical staff is made up of 14 Interventional Radiologists and 11 nurse practitioners. 21,000 patients are seen per year. The department utilizes an IR simulation lab (Mentice simulator) where weekly faculty supervised training is provided. The department also conducts several cutting edge human and animal trials including but not limited to studies on endovascular AVF creation, prostate artery embolization, liver regeneration using stem cells and geniculate artery embolization. The department has an IR robotics lab and full use of an animal lab – which is equipped with an animal CT scanner, MRI and an Angiosuite.
The University of Miami Interventional Radiology Department’s mission is to provide state of the art, safe and compassionate patient care while training the next generation of innovators and leaders in Interventional Radiology. Our vision is to continue growing into a global leader in interventional radiology and minimally invasive therapies and to be the top research and education destination in our field.
