I am pretty sure that many live very close to campus, but how bad would it be to live 30 minutes away from school? Does anyone care to offer their thoughts on this? The nature of my question has more to do with workload and having an hour worth of driving to do each day. i.e. could it be an issue? Thanks in advance for any input.

I'd say that 30 minutes +/- is pretty accurate under normal conditions. I drive to the area 4 times per week already.

While I don't personally commute to school, I do have a couple of classmates that did and they had a similar commute time. For them it became a hassle as that 30 minutes often stretched into 45 or 60 minutes if there was an accident or other what-nots on the road. Needless to say a couple of weeks ago I helped one of them move next to campus as the commute started to grind on his nerves. I suppose it depends on how comfortable you are with the workload, your school scedule, etc. - things you'll discover as you go along that great journey called dental school.

I generally spend about 30 minutes commuting to school without any traffic on some morning(usually it goes up to about 40 mins or more...)
On afternoons it's hell..nearly an hour according to what time I leave.

i say you only should commute if sex is involved..my wife at the time will be working in dc so we have to come to an agreement and live in the middle of d.c and baltimore...if we lived in baltimore, the stress of her having to drive that far would lead to less sex

You should have a problem. Mine's about 35-40 in the morning (+ another 10 min from parking lot to building) and 50-55 in the afternoon due to heavier traffic.

One suggestion: If you are concerned about traffic tie-ups because of construction, wrecks, etc; just tune to an am radio station with traffic reports every 10 min or so during 'drive time'

Do you mean he "shouldn't" have a problem?
