Is anyone psyched about duke?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am, all i need to do now is get in! (Class of 2009 baby - my application is almost done)

Duke sucks. Get over it.

Doesn't Duke combine the first two years into one? I have to give you guys credit . . . I think I would be beyond stressed out if I went out there. But congrats on going there, it's obviously a great school.

ha,
hes right. enjoy the misery that is duke. youll find out soon. durham and its recent residents are sweeeeeeeeeeeeeet.

The University of Illinois also combines the 2 years of medical sciences into 1 year so that there can be 3 years of clinicals. Duke ain't special.

I'm not psyched about Duke and I'm not entirely sure as to why...maybe it's because I didn't apply there. Yeah, that must be it. 😛

Ummmm, not according to this:

http://www.uic.edu/depts/mcam/chicago/medcur.html

While U of I's second year teaches courses that have more relevance to the clinical context, this is far from unique, as almost all schools do pathophysiology, immunology, etc. in the second year. Duke does all the things listed under M1 and M2 here in the first year. Their students start rotations in their second year. Duke is the only program that does this (I'm 99% sure on this, but correct me if I'm wrong).

That being said, I think Duke med students must be a special breed because I can't imagine packing those two years together. I know I couldn't do it.

They don't cover as much material in 1 year as other med students with the traditional 2 preclinical + 2 clinical years. According to my friend, who graduated from med school 2 a year ago and is currently an intern at Duke, it's not humanly possible to compress both preclinical years into 1--some material must be cut out. But I guess everything works out in the end...Duke med students pick up the omitted material either on the wards or on their own.

DOOOOOOOOOOOK 🙂

i thought duke finished the preclincals in 1.5 years like uvm.

g3pro and elias,
Im not quite sure why you're raining on JohnHolmes parade. I mean seriously, its one thing to have an opinion (though unfortunately the basis for your opinions are incorrect facts), but does it make you feel good to hijack a thread where someone is looking for some classmates to talk about his school with?

Duke is one-year preclinicals. Yeah its compressed, but Duke kids are smart enough to handle it. If they couldnt, they wouldnt have an incredible match list. In fact, the one-year preclinicals is what attracts students from peer institutions (Harvard, Hopkins) because you get a free year to do research or something else that really boosts your application.

Durham? Its not a good college city at all, its basically New Haven with more trees and MUCH MUCH MUCH better weather. Its not a major city, but then again no one ever said it was. But since it isnt a city housing is dirt cheap and you can actually park.

Duke's a good school, I know a lot of cool people there. Its most definitely not the med school for me (considering the cost and another 4 years of durham having grown up in the big city), but its definitely a great fit for others.
