Is gabapentin and/or lyrica safe in pregnancy and/or breastfeeding patients?

Reviewing the literature online, seems to be somewhat limited in recommendations:

And if safe, up to normal max doses (3600 mg/300 mg)?

at this point in time, esp with more data suggesting questionable evidence, I would not start.

Gabapentin and Lyrica are both secreted in breast milk.

These medications suppress nerve function, not a great thing for growing nervous systems.

They're both considered a category C.

Some evidence out there of damaged babies.

I say no.

Agree with the above. In pregnancy - adverse effects seen for gabapentin animal studies. We will never have anything beyond retrospective data. Regarding lactation and medications, this is a good resource for most drugs:


Rarely do I find stopping gabapentinoids for a year will significantly decrease quality of life.
