Is it a bad thing

Yes, that is a very bad thing.

You can't pass up opportunities in this game.

Take the acceptance.

take your acceptance and don't look back....leaving this whole bs process up to chance for a 2nd time is most likely not a good idea...

I am going to be very honest about this...so pardon me if I offend you....ARE YOU NUTS? Applying to medical schools, scoring interviews, and finally getting an acceptance is an incredible hurdle to overcome and you should count your blessings that you are in a position where you have an acceptance at (I am assuming) an U.S. School. So why would you want to go over this process again? There are so many people here, myself included that would be happy to go to any medical school in the U.S., if it's in a rat-infested, urban hell hole, I'll gladly strap on a vest and head to class. If it is in Cowtown, USA, guess what, I'll milk the hell out of Bessie and head to class. The point is, you have a golden opportunity and chance....don't throw it away untill very carful and absolute consideration.

Yeah after all the BS I've gone through (not to mention the money I've spent) this past year I can't realistically see myself doing it again.

But seriously, OP, take the acceptance and be done with this madness.

Ha ha, I like the cow part...

that reminds me...how do you make holy water???

.....

you boil the hell out of it.

And seriously, if you really don't want that acceptance I will be happy to go live in cowtown, or hellhole, or forgotten, USA, as long as I have an acceptance to medical school.

I agree with the above. I was in the same situation where I got into an out of state school and waitlisted at my state schools which were my top choices. I am glad I took the acceptance and started medschool. Not only you'd spend more time and money on this process but I've also heard medschools look down upon someone who denies an acceptance to medschool to hope for a better one (somehow they find out I guess). Plus, there will be many students like you in your first year class who couldn't make it to a "better" school. Take the acceptance and its your game after that as far as how you want to perform in medschool.

i'm asking cause someone i know really wants to take that path...

That is really not a good idea...You don't know what could happen next year...

lol. great advice!!!

Unless by reapplying you think you might have a great chance to do something in the coming year that a) you won't be able to do at any point in your life, b) will make your application notably more impressive.... though, it might just be worth it to do it all over again if a)the school you got into is too expensive and you want to try again to get into a state school, b) the location of the school you were accepted at is in a place where you feel you could not be happy (no family there, bf/gf, etc.)... in the end, it's up to you -- but remember that as soon as you send in that notice of withdrawal, you're setting yourself up to relive the grueling application process and risking your dream of becoming a physician.

I think I can agree with most of the things that have already been posted; Mateodapsy especially brings up a good point by saying that you should re-apply if you are pursuing an opportunity that will be unavailable later, or if you will be doing something that significantly enhances your chances. Then again, in such a "crapshoot" process, applying for the second time around might not be such a bad idea if your friend is willing to put up with the stress, time, and money. I don't think it looks that great if you are applying to all the same schools, but if they are different you could even spin it to your benefit: i.e. I reapplied because I found out about your program and like it so much I had to give it a shot. Personally, I'm done. I haven't gotten into any of my dream schools (yet), but I'm willing to go the places I've already been accepted to, and I will do it happily. I wouldn't have applied to them otherwise.

to decline an acceptance and applying next year in hopes of going to a school that someone wants?

Agree with all the above. If your "friend" takes the reapplicant route, it's safe to say that he/she will not get accepted to this same school again, and as a reapplicant may be looked at in the application process differently. Some schools require reapplicants to have improved their applications dramatically since the prior cycle. Simply submitting the same app again won't do it. The person would also need to have a darn good reason for why they turned down this acceptance too, as to not have a strong reason suggests a lack of committment to medicine. Schools don't like prestige hopping, and so if you would rather not be a doctor unless you can be one from eg. only one of the top ten schools, you probably don't have the committment to the profession desirable to adcoms.

I know of a girl who did this. She was in at some relatively low tier school but withdrew. The next app. cycle she got in at U Penn.

This doesn't mean you should do that for sure. Only you can decide how realistic your odds are of getting into a better school. I just don't think you should automatically listen to everyone repeating the same old tired line, "an acceptance is an acceptance." Think it through for yourself.

I heard from an admissions administrator at one of my state schools that your required to reveal that you were accepted before to a different school, and that alone will make you look worse for ad coms during the second cycle.

Uhm - if you asked a girl out and she said "hell no, get away from me, you aren't good enough for me," what would you say if a month later she came crawling back and said "Ted, the guy I really wanted said no, so I guess I can settle for you?"

Hopefully you would tell her to piss off - and that is what any self respecting adcom would do too.

turning down an acceptance and re-applying the next year would make adcoms think you're not serious about medicine. i believe they know if you're a re-applicant and if they find out you were previously accepted, that'll make you look bad. go wherever you got in. you may fall in love with a school after a few days there. it doesn't really matter where you graduated from once you're out.

This is not a great place to look for advice because almost everyone is going to launch into the soap box routine about how an acceptance is an acceptance . . . .

There is some truth in what they say, but this is an individualized decision and there are certainly cases where it would make sense to reapply. Also some schools won't even know that you reapplied. It doesn't ask you on the Amcas app if you've applied to med school before (it asks for individual schools--all schools will know if you've applied to their schools before). In theory they can find out but they would have to look.

I agree, wholeheartedly and by the way, you are hilarious. 🙂
