i heard rumor about this. is it TRUE?

btw, i am a canadian univ student. is it possible to get into a US school? thanks alot

Yes, this is true. However, you shouldn't be concerned about this fact. You shouldn't go to dental school just because you have a better chance to get in. Nor should you go to med school because it has a higher status since it is harder to get into med school if you compare it to dental school (some people think this way). These two fields are great but they are also very different. You want to make sure you end up in a career that you enjoy. Base your decision (med or dent) on your passion and what is important to you in life. Having said that, good luck in your decision.

which schools are you talking about mcataz that are easier to get into with low gpa's assuming high DATS

Hi X-linked,

I am a Canadian university student as well, and I have accepted a seat at the University of Pittsburgh dental school. So yes....many Canadians do get into the US. The best advice I can give you is to send in your AADSAS application early...especially being Canadian...since AADSAS always has a hard time converting the Canadian grading system to the American (for my university any way).

So good luck, and feel free to post me a message if you need any more advice. 😀

As both a medical and dental applicant myself, I find that dental schools are significantly easier to get in than medical schools. ( and no, I'm not a failed pre-med. I really did get into some med schools but I had to turn them down due to personal and health problems )

I applied to only 5 dental schools, 4 of which sent me acceptances on the first week of Dec. The acceptance letter for the 5th school came about a month later. Out of the 17 med schools I applied to, I only received 4 interviews ( lots of trick questions ), 2 acceptances, and 7 rejections.

My pointless AMCAS process was like tossing a bag full of money into the fire but at least I know that I have what it takes to be an MD.

There are some DO schools are less competitive than certain dental schools but, overall, it is much more difficult to get into a single DO school than it is to a single dental school.

hi Hot-n-Aml

so did you take the canadian DAT or US DAT? and whats the average GPA to get in? any idea? you attended U OF T for undergraduate? 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

QUESTION: is DAT more important or GPA? and btw, does the admission committe take the summer course into gpa calculation as well? or just ignore the summer course?

THANKS ALOT

DAT is more important than GPA. GPA is so subjective that it is easily swayed by factos like major, school attended, courseload, part-time jobs etc. The DAT tests everyone at the same level and it gives an indication how one will do on the boards. It's the most important criteria.

Hi X-linked,

I only took the Canadian DAT since the majority of schools in the US do accept it. As for GPA, AADSAS calculates it differently compared to Canada. I had a 3.43 overall, and about 3.3 science. All courses, including summer, are counted. What made the difference for me was the interview, as well as dental related experience. It also helps to have an amazing essay that will tell them who you are as creatively as possible.

I'm an honors biology major at the University of Western Ontario actually finishing up my last year. I have an interview for western dental, but it's very limited...which is why I applied to the US.

The best advice I can give you is to give it all you got. I honestly didn't think I had a chance since one of my undergrad years suffered because of personal reasons. But I pulled up my GPA in third year, and I was determined to show them that I had what it takes. Out of 6 interviews, I received 3 acceptances, and I took UPitt because I felt so at home and welcomed there.

So good luck, and I'll be looking out for any other questions that you might have... 🙂

On the whole, yes, med school admissions is more competitive if you just look at the numbers who apply/get admitted; however, there are definitely some dental schools that are harder to get into than many dental schools, so it's very case specific. My med school class at UVM (allopathic, not DO) had a lower undergrad GPA than my dental class here at UNC.

Of course, more important than any of this is that you obviously shouldn't apply just based on which one you might think you'll get into. Either way, if you really want to, you can easily dedicate yourself to getting into these professional programs, it's really not rocket science 😉
