Is it normal for Schools to contact before AADSAS mails?

So My ADDSAS was mailed out in Mid August to some of my school...yet for WestU, LLU, and NYU it doesn't show up that they have received it or it is under review? But the weird thing is...they have both contacted me through email saying they are reviewing my apps...I just wanted to see if this is a normal thing?

Western and NYU don't use the portal and they mention that in the first emails they send out
