Absolutely. My co-fellow was IM trained. Impressive guy. He did describe it as more difficult to get time for electives during residency due to the amount of inpatient and call at his residency, but was an incredible co-fellow to have given all his knowledge.

Most fellowships should be open to you outside of peds and PM&R only programs.

The current AMSSM president is IM-trained. There are very few programs that will take IM-trained applicants out of lack of a continuity clinic or familiarity, for that reason it is an up-hill battle.
