IS it possible to shift to IM in 2nd yr from FP 1st yr?

hi guyz,
i dunno if this is the right forum to post this query, but any input will be greatly appreciated as I am very anxious now a days.
my situation is that i m doing FP PGY1 from a good university prog, i was quite confused between FP and IM before the match but i opted for FP for various reasons. Now i feel i might not be in a field of my choice and i keep yearning to go to IM.
is it possible for any one to change from FP to IM in 2nd yr? has anyone ever done that? can u do that in the same program?

any inputs at all will b greatly appreciated!!!!

Is it possible in general? Yes, of course. Is it possible for you? That depends on a lot of things. First of all, you should talk with your program director. You'll need his/her help to change programs. Then, you'll need to find an IM program to accept you. Since the core requirements of an FP and IM residency are slightly different, a switch will extend your residency by a few months at least. Your funding in your final year may be affected. Again, talk with your PD.

Depending on how desperately the program you are applying for needs PGY-2 residents, you may only have to do a few extra months of training rather than repeating the entire internship. Definitely give it a try though.

i am not sure but i heard from a person who wanted to do that, that you can switch and yo might receive credit for like a few months, but sometimes the board for internal medicine is alittle tricky depending on where you want to get liscenced, and some of them want you to do the whole year, for licesnsing reasons.. but anyway like everyone else suggested check with your PD and the new program as well to see what they deem for credit. also try to stay in good with your current PD.
