...and is on the verge of losing Brookdale Hospital as well? They're both dumps of hospitals, so it might ultimately be a good thing to get rid of them 😉

but since NYCOM continues to accept about eleventy billion students each year, where the heck are the MS-3's going to be placed if NYCOM loses two of its major affiliates?

Not entirely true. NYCOM and St. Barnabus are rumored to be parting ways when it comes to their post-graduate affiliation, namely the OPTI and the ER program there is probably best in the D.O. land, a minor loss for NYCOM. Clerkships (3rd year rotations) are said to not be affected at least to date. There's a ton of politics involved with the story from what I hear. It doesnt have much to do with quality of students or either side being unhappy in the care/teaching of the opposite party. It has more to do w/ the president of the hospital having very close personal ties with administration who got the axe from NYIT a year or two back. Whatever. Life goes on. There's still about 35 other hospitals to choose from.

I havent heard anything about Brookdale, I doubt that one. Both may be "dumps" of hospitals, but both are tertiary care centers, level I trauma centers and have affiliations with top schools in NY. St. Barnabus is supposedly the 4th busiest trauma center in all of NY. Both resonably nice places to learn once you get past the lack of a a recent paint job.

I agree that the loss of St. Barnabas won't mean much to third year clerkships, because NYCOM has so many strong affiliations.

I am worried about the loss of residencies. In addition to the Emergency Medicine program, which as Oceandoc pointed out has an excellent reputation, we are also losing competitive residencies such as Dermatology, Diagnostic Radiology, and General Surgery.

Although any osteopathic student can still apply to these spots, it would only be natural for PCOM students to get preference. Considering that these spots are already hard to get, that is not good news for NYCOM students interested in these fields.

And by the way, almost the entire OMM department at NYCOM has resigned.

This is true on paper, but in reality programs are more partial to the students who rotate in their institutions, not necessarily the students of the school's name on the umbrella. All signs point to NYCOM retaining all their 3rd year clerkships at St. Barnabus, hence if the students rotate well and impress, they'll probably have as much if not more of a chance as a pcom student who to my knowledge still wont have official 3rd year clerkships there. The other thing to remember is the docs who run all those programs are mostly NYCOM grads.

As far as the OMM department, from my understanding 4 resigned, 1 didnt get rehired, and 4 remain. It'll throw off curriculum a bit I imagine, but it'll be a bleep on the radar screen in a few months.
