from the website, it says that keck-usc will be interviewing through may. does anyone know if they are still offering intervuew invitations? please post your thoughts here. thanks.

i called the other day & they said they are still inviting people. i can't remember the exact date through which they will be inviting people, but it was either the end of march or the beginning of april.

so they are still inviting...that is good to hear ---i thought they were done interviewing.

thanks for posting your comments and information here. i hope that they offer all of us an interview invitation asap! good luck to everyone in the process.

yes, USC is still interviewing but I am not holding my breath for an invite from them. They are so weird in their admissions process. My friend last year interviewed all over the place, even got in to some really good schools like Michigan, BU, UCLA, but didn't even get an interview from USC. His numbers were good, especially for a URM. Anyways he's happy as a first year at UCLA now, so it's all good. I believe USC is trying to raise their rankings that's why they are trying to recruit as many above average-MCAT/GPA people as possible (especially high verbal people >10), I mean did you see their averages? GPA 3.6, MCAT 32? and USC is not even a top 25 school....anyways, if by a miracle I get an interview, it would be awesome, best of luck everyone!

I plan on calling within the next couple of days...I'll see what kind of info I can get for us all. I'm not too hopeful at this point, however.

thanks dr. will....we'll be looking forward to your comments.....

Any particular reason why USC is looking for individuals with high verbal scores?

BUMP! Any advice on getting an interview invite from Keck-USC? Please post your comments here. Thanks.

I guess you can't take a hint. 🙂

(323) 442-2552 . I know this because I called them last week and posted the conversation on this website. It's become a common understanding that the administration tries to tell you as little as possible during routine status check phone calls.

If you luck out, however, please do us all a favor and let us know what's up.
Thanks NY Girl

hey violinrose, I believe it's because of the "stupid" correlation they make with MCAT verbal and higher passing rate of the boards. I say it's stupid because according to the "studies" done that's what's seen, however the key word here is correlation between verbal and boards, there is not cause and effect relationship of any sort. As a matter of fact I personally know people with low verbals (even below national averages -7) who did fine in their boards, as well as people with their 10's and failing it....so what does this tell you? the system is not perfect, but in order for changes to be made we have to be part of that system first. That's why once I get in to med school, I'm planning on staying involved in community health care and bringing in more diversity to our med schools...because it's just getting ridiculous how some schools' (ie San Diego) class profile is like....anyways I think I went off on a tangent here. I don't mean any disrespect to anyone, I just have some issues with how biased standardized exams are.

Oh please let it be true that USC is looking for good verbal scores...they were me saving grace (and the only reason I broke into the 30's). Which is odd, mind you, seeing as I was the tradn'l science major, and have been working in Pham-chem research for 2 years. The basic sciences were just sooo long ago for people who have been out of school.
Who did you hear this verbal tale from, and are they in the "in group"?

Yeah. I especially hate the way that the MCAT helps out people who learn better and can do well on tests. What does any of that have to do with being a doctor or being in medical school?????

But as for USC favoring verbal scores, I donno where anybody would get this information. It seems like something that is pure urban legend or word of mouth. I would say they favor higher MCAT scores as a whole, but hey, who doesn't. My class had an average MCAT of 32.4, with I think verbal having about a 10 average.

i just called and they were sooooooo unhelpful and i can't stress that enough...all she said was..."interviewing for a few more weeks"...i was too scared to ask anything b/c she was so mean!!!

I hate to be a tad bit mean, but they probably get about 20-50 of those calls a day. I can totally understand them not wanting to look up everybody's individual record (esp when 90% of them is probably bad news) when they have a lot of other things to do. I hope you do get lucky, but I can understand their position.

There is definitely hope for everyone who wants to go to Keck, I got my interview invite beginning of last week, but turned it down. Hopefully someone who wants to go to Keck will get the spot. Good luck guys.

I'm just curious, what school did you turn USC down for??

I'm definitely not dissing Keck and it has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that I went to UCLA as an undergrad...🙂 But after talking to some Keck grads, I feel that my money will be better spent experiencing something new. The grads didn't have anything exceptional to say about their experience in medical school. I've lived in southern California all my life and love it, but I'm definitely not gonna spend ~$45000/year for four years to remain in the same environment that I spent the last 22.5 years in. Keck is a great school, but when I have opportunities waiting for me at Pitt(hopefully) and Einstein, both great schools, I have to jump at them. I do however have a UCI interview coming up in April, and it'll be mighty difficult making the decision between state and private tuition.

thanks for your comment and good luck on your upcoming interviews and i hope you end up at a school you like..........go ucla bruins!

I was just a little surprised because it said in your tagline that you were in Einstien and GWU, and I was shocked that you wouldn't even go on an interview to check out the place. But hey, I guess that is your choice. One of the biggest reasons I like Keck is that I am pretty much gaurunteed that I can stay her in southern Cali after med school.

Oh, and I went to UCLA, too.

The truth is, throughout my undergrad years, I believed that all I wanted was to remain in Socal for medical school. Now that I've graduated and had a chance to reflect, I'm looking at medical school as a chance to experience something new. Yes, I do think that medical school in LA will be fine, but I think I'll enjoy it even more while getting to experience something new. How else am I going to know if I truly love southern California without living somewhere else first? If I don't enjoy the east coast, I can always come back for residency. I foresee too many other opportunities to be able to just pickup and move, with the option of returning later if I want.

I guess another reason behind turning down the interview is I'm just getting tired of the whole application process. I recently turned down interviews to NYU and Mt. Sinai as well, since I already had my acceptance to Einstein in hand. Didn't feel the other schools could offer me enough to justify the expense of making another trip to the East Coast. Now going to a UC is a totally different story, but I won't force myself to make the decision until after I know the result.

yeah, thats about right. Wow I was feeling mean on this thread (earlier) I think it was b/c Dr. Dpn set me off. Sorry about that.

Does Keck screen for secondaries? Thanks.
Also, do out of staters (not from the west coast) have to have extraordinary stats? My stats (coming from an Ivy) while not stellar, are decent, but I have lots of research experience at HUP and CHOP in Philly (both lab/academic, published and clinical), interesting ECs/hobbies, and working abroad in Asian healthcare/UN/WHO experiences.
I *really* want to go to Keck; I'm looking to relocate as well... I just hope I won't get screened out, if that's the way they do secondaries.... Any feedback appreciated, thanks.

They do not screen for secondaries. I actually think you have a good chance coming from an IVY. A lot of our students have lately been coming from the east coast (My roommate is from Dartmouth) As long as you can prove you know enough about Keck and why you want to be there, you should be fine.
