Hey guys,

I just received my acceptance to MCP. I hold an acceptance at one of my state schools (NYS resident), which I'm not wild about while I am waiting on the decision of another. I really liked MCP and think that I would be happy. However, I also hear a lot of the school's financial instability. Do you guys think MCP is worth the extra $, or should I suck it up and go to a state school that I'm not exactly wild about? Thanks for the input.

Hey wes,

I interviewed way back in January. 30 MCAT, 3.8 GPA from small liberal arts college.

I didn't apply to MCP because when I was choosing schools initially I had heard about their financial problems and I was worried. Now they've been bought and seem to be ok. I added them to my AMCAS, but got the secondary right before it was due and so I didn't bother applying, but I certainly would have after the sale. If I were you, I'd go to MCP if you liked it much better. I think it should probably be fine there.

That would be...well...not smart imho.

player,

are you at a SUNY now?

god forbid <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" />
but the future awaits me

I am planning on attending MCP-H in the fall. Of course, I am a PA resident, and not NY. But I do know that their financial instability is fine now-- they are "affiliated" with Drexel (as made obvious by the logos on every bit of correspondance from the school) and the merger is happening this summer.

I loved the school. I was thrilled with the atmosphere, city, and people. I want to go somewhere that I love, not somewhere that is totally cheap. Yeah, it's a lot of money, but this whole process, and the next 4 years is gonna be a lot of money!

Well, if anyone ends up picking MCP-H, give me a PM and we can chat before school starts!

 Mylaina

I'll be graduating from SUNY Upstate in a month... some private schools certainly may have better facilities, but it would have taken a much bigger name than MCP for me to be lured away from the low SUNY tuition... it makes a huge difference in total debt after four years, and the education is amazingly similar.
I say go with a SUNY; I doubt you'll regret it in the end.

I was accepted to MCP, but withdrew from since it would have been the most expensive of all the private schools to which I was accepted (GW, NYMC, Einstein.) I was also accepted to Temple and would have chosen Temple over MCP in a heart beat. (The location of Temple is urban (it's in the ghetto) and I feel it would have given me a better education, both in the basic sciences and clinically. It would also have saved me 6K a year.)

When I withdrew, I felt MCP was still recovering from its financial hardships and my dad even told me not to go there. (He's in with the hospital stuff since he's a doctor.) While I was impressed with the technology of the school, I didn't want to be in the western part of Philly and their board scores are horrible. I think only 85% of the last year's class passed.

Dr Kermit:

I can always count on you for the obligatory MCP slam. I can understand your deciding to turn down their offer of acceptance, but whenever the school is mentioned you chime in with why you think it stinks. Why did you apply there?

The USMLE pass rate you mention is correct--when I was there they explained that only 70% of those in problem-based learning track passed last year while a more typical 95% passed in traditional track. In years past PBL students scored as well as everyone else. Draw your own conclusions.

I don't think it does anyone any good to continually malign a particular school. Regarding the original poster's question--if passing up a SUNY acceptance for MCP feels right to you, do it. You need to be comfortable with your final decision and less concerned with what other people think.

When I looked at MCP I actually really liked it. I thought they were making some pretty progressive technology changes and really cared about the students. I personally when I looked was thinking the PBL side, but I heard that 25% of THOSE students failed the boards last year (they assured me they have already changed the curriculum to make sure this never happens again, by putting in mock board test in the fall to allow the students to gauge where they are, more classroom time, with some more structured classes). Personally I wasn't thrilled about the area, however, it was right on the subway line and much cheaper and nicer than living downtown....as for versus a suny...I always looked at med school is going to be a difficult time so you should choose a school you think you will be happy. I also am trying to make that very hard decision of private vs a suny....I was really disappointed at upstate and downstate when I asked about funding and opportunities to the students I basically was told you have to give up some opportunities to save in money...which really disapointed me. I don't think however, either school(s) will make that much a difference in your career....

I was accepted to MCP/Hahneman also and liked the school but was apprehensive about their fincancial stability and also poor USMLE passing rates. After doing some research, I no longer feel that they are financially unstable, especially since the deal with Drexel went through last week or so. As for the passing rates, I wouldn't let that disuade you, because it may have just been a fluke. I know plenty of good doctors who went to Hahneman, and I would not worry about it. For myself, I declined acceptance because I got into Temple and Jefferson, two school I liked better. Go where you feel comfortable, that's all. Don't worry about the rankings or any of that black and white crap. You'll be much more successful at a place if you want to be there and you feel comfortable. Good luck!

I'm sorry if it seems I continually put down your school. I don't mean to in anyway, I don't remember what I've written in the past except that I did visit both Temple and Hahemann and preferred Temple.

Everything I wrote in the above post is true. They were in poor financial shape a few years ago and only the merger will help them. Also, they don't have as great of a reputation as the other schools.

I applied to MCP since I'm a PA resident with stats above theirs. As there is no guarantee with admissions, it was a lower tiered school I was interested in attending. After visiting, I withdrew my acceptacnce b/c I preferred other schools.

In know way do I feel badly about MCP, I just didn't want to go there and the original poster wanted to know if a state school was a better deal. I merely answered.
