Just asking this ...my psychology professor kept telling us that he had a PhD in psychology (and is really proud of that). He also says that he has had so many clients he had counselled. But when I checked his degree, all it said was that he had a PhD in education and he didnt even have an undergrad degree in psychology.....But is it still possible for him to give counselling? He also said recently that he was unlicensed and he was going to get his license though the exam, but the thing which caught me was how can he give counsellign without a license....
Someone please tell me if he is a phony
Thanks
Nev

1. when you look at a university listing, they usually only list the highest degree attained, unless you are looking at a full CV.
2. Is his degree in educaional/school psych?
3. Is he speaking of counseling experiences as a student? Was he previously licensed at the masters level?

- These are possible explanantions. You should find out the answers

Anybody can call themselves a counsellor/therapist - no licence required. Many psychologists graduate with a Ed. Doctoral degree which is equivalent to a PhD. No mysteries or CV loopholes there 🙂

Well this person had his BS in biology, then he did his masters and his doctorate degree in education. He told us that he did marriage counselling and personal counselling and to me it seemed as though he was saying that he did all sorts of counselling...

anybody can hang up a shingle and do counselling/therapy....even without having gone to elementary school...
On a related note, I don't understand why the two APAs don't do a better job of educating the public what job means what credentials...

Heh, that's debatable.

To each his own 🙂 I've worked with some Ed.D. that have received solid assessment and treatment training but I guess that's just my experience...
Heck, I wouldn't even say all PhDs are equivalent having been in two graduate schools..
