Is periodontology and periodontists prominent in your school's curriculum?

I'm just curious. My school seems to heavily involve periodontists and periodontology in our courses compared to other specialists or specialties.

Oh, god, I call them King Perio. They are given way too much say in treatment plans around here, relative to other specialties.

Same thing at my school: you needed approval from a restorative dentist, and a periodontist to begin treatment on a patient.
