I heard that Pritzker was in a dangerous neighborhood. Is this true? I got into the school and was very impressed by it but I am a little apprehensive about the Hyde Park? Does anyone who knows the area better have any feedback? Thanks!

I used to live just north of Hyde Park and LOVED it. It has really changed over the last 8 years or so. It may be a bit shocking if you are not from a big city, but it is a great neighborhood of Chicago.

I attended Uchicago undergrad, and I never had an unsafe encounter in my 3.5 years there. I would often walk back alone from the Regenstein library to my apt 3 blocks away at 1-2 a.m. In the past, Uchicago had such a reputation for being in an unsafe area that it was a huge turn-off for applicants, and so the school has really beefed up its security. I think we have one of the largest private police forces in the country. You are more likely to be harassed by a corrupt Chicago Police Department officer than a mugger. But the campus police officers are super nice. Also, the whole Uchicago campus is tiny compared to most schools, so it's not difficult to get around by bike or simply to wait for a shuttle/escort if you don't want to walk.

That being said, be safe and aware of your surroundings. If you don't feel safe walking alone at night, then don't. There are van services and police escorts to help you get home. I did find the med school library (Crerar) area to be less well lit and was scary for me only because I'm afraid of the dark and shadows of construction equipment.

Congrats on Pritzker!

Look at this. Lots of stats about actual crime oncampus & in the neighborhood. By federal law, this information must be made available by every college and university. Search on the school's website for crime disclosure and you'll usually turn up the report.

Hyde Park is a very nice neighborhood. There are some rougher areas not too far from there, but overall it's a relatively safe part of Chicago. And, Hyde Park, like all of Chicago (and most large cities really) is as safe as you make it. Being aware of your surroundings, not wandering alone at night, etc. is going to make more of an impact on your safety than anything else. Congrats on getting into Pritzker, and definitely don't let the safety issue keep you from going!

If you like Thai food, make sure you eat at "The Snail"-- it is really much better than it sounds.

That being said, Hyde Park is an example of every big city's "Good Block--Bad Block" situation. Hell, Cabrini Green is a stone's throw away from the Gold Coast!

Champaign-Urbana suffered from "Good Block--Bad Block" syndrome. And for some reason, the area immediately surrounding most hospitals is not usually the best area to be in, no matter what city or part of the city-- even Northwestern's hospital campus had some sketchy areas.

I agree with the other posters that Hyde Park is not as bad as it used to be or is rumored to be, but like anywhere, your safety is ultimately up to you.

Did you know that every year approximately 700,000 women are raped in America?
