I can graduate in four years (I'll go over as is), but I was thinking about taking an extra semester so I can study more for the MCATs and boost my GPA. Would this be frowned upon, encouraged, neutral, etc?

I wouldn't think so. I see a lot of people graduating in 5 years (especially those who transferred from community colleges). As long as you're gaining experience, I don't see anything wrong with it.

Do whatever you feel would help you the most. Keep in mind that an extra semester will mean more loans and you will have to work a few months before starting medical school (assuming you get in).

It definitely won't harm you and you will be saving yourself more money by staying in your undergrad degree than being a post-bacc.
