Is this an excellent rec letter?

I just got my committee letter emailed to me to look over.

Is anyone interested in reading it and then giving me some comments?

I don't want to list it due to the personal content, but I will pm it to anyone that is interested in helping. I really don't have a choice about submitting it, but I am just wonder what this letter would rank on the following scale:

Excellent (Top 5%), > Great (Top 10%) > Good (Top 75%) > Average (Top 50%) > Poor (I wouldn't submit it if I were you)

Thanks
JD

I'll look it over and give you my opinion. I've got extensive experience with writing performance reports in my job, but much less with pre-med committee letters, so take my offer for what it's worth.

Thanks again to everyone who looked at it

Well? What was the verdict, pops?

Looks like it is a good one. It was my first rec letter that I was able to see, but I am glad it turned out the way it did.

Thanks again to everyone, I need to start studying MCAT so I won't be on SDN anymore until late tonight.

Good luck to everyone who is going through this crazy process.

I thought it looked better to med schools to waive access to your rec letters. That's what my pre-med advisor and any MD's I've talked with have said anyway. I waived access to mine. Just curious, do most people on SDN see their rec letters or not?

How would the school know?

Hmmmm, I guess that's a good point. I had to complete rec letter request forms for my school that had to accompany the rec letter to the pre-health office when the writer turned it in. I had to sign this request form and indicate whether I did or did not waive access to the letters. I guess for some reason, I assumed the med schools would have knowledge of this information somehow, but now that I'm thinking about it, I really don't know how. Unless the pre-health committee at my school makes some sort of statement about it in the committee letter.

The whole waiving process is hokey. If people writing letters let you see them, it's all good. If they allow you to edit the letter, even better, like you could suggest that they add the sentence, "in summary, this applicant is the muthaf**king bomb!" to the end of the letter...just kidding

My school sends the waiver forms with the letter or states whether the waiver was filled out or not.

Seems to me that it would be a real non sequitur for your pre-health committee to tack on a "Oh, btw, DGhiker wouldn't waive his right to read these letters, what a jerk." 😀
