I was told by a staff member at Mercer school of medicine ( a small primary care oriented school in GA) that one of their students had gotten a perfect board score and that they would therefore be able to get what ever kind of residency they want. How much of an exaggeration is this? Can someone who goes to such a school and scores really well on step exam get a ROAD residency some where?

can someone who goes to a "no name" undergrad get an acceptance to an ivy medical school?

Quick answer if someone at any school MD or DO got a perfect step 1 score and had excellent LOR and a great CV then yes they would most likely get any residency they wanted. Location might not be their first choice, but if they wanted to do cardiothorasic surgery, they are going to do cardiothorasic surgery.

Well, for starters, there's technically no such thing as a perfect board score because the boards don't have an upper limit...

But what you're asking is whether someone who goes to a low-ranked med school can get, say, a residency at MGH. The answer to that is yes it's possible, and no, the med school you go to doesn't make that big of a difference in what sort of residency you get (just like undergrad doesn't necessarily define where you can get into med school).

the interview can save or destroy any applicant. Nothing is a guarantee.

This and realistically some of the TOP residencies in some subfields will only place students into their program if they come from the right pedigree aka top medical schools.
