i think any rate of GI bleed causes it but it's more common in UGIB. the stomach chews up the blood, liver metabolizes those proteins to BUN via urea cycle. Some rare meds, like vanc, can also do it.

More common in brisk UGIB. Its not necessarily that the BUN rises and Cr doesn't, just that BUN rises out of proportion to Cr.
