J-1 research visas

I?m a medical student in Spain preparing to do my graduate medical education in US.
I would like to know if it is possible do some research between I finish my medical school on august 2002 and I start the residency on july 2003 under a J-1 clinical visa.Is it possible to have any research visa for 6 months and a few months latter ask for a J-1 clinical visa or it is incompatible?
