yeah, my letter says we'd find out more about our position on the waitlist at the end of april.

I do know that they take 40-60 people of the alternate list, and from searching past years on SDN, I think they've told you what tier of the alternate list you fall on (this may change, who knows).

    gluck to everyone!

They changed that last year, when they didn't bother to tell you the tier, instead saying to return some form if you're still interested. Dunno if it's still like last year or like previous years.

Is the "update" letter that gives more info an e-mail or snail?

haven't called them but i think we'll just end up with them asking us whether or not we want to stay on the list and then probably won't hear anything until after may 15th. boo. i guess you can try and call them in april if you want more personal information.

Yeah I think this is correct. A friend of mine was on the JHU waitlist last year, never found out which tier he was on, but got admitted at the end of May.

I heard Hopkins was one of those schools that doesn't want you to send them stuff. Is this correct?

I read a previous JHU waitlist thread where someone claimed to have called the admissions and they specifically requested that nothing be sent. However, my friend who was admitted last year told me that he sent letters/updates in April and May, and, well, clearly it didn't hurt. If Hopkins is your top choice, I would write to them if I were you. Even if they say, "don't send us stuff" people will still do it. Your app may be compared to someone who has been sending them love letters, and I mean, again, it can't hurt...

Is this true that Hopkins doesn't appreciate (and may even find irksome) update letters, LOIs, etc?

I was in the midst of writing a Letter of Intent...

    Maybe I should hold off?

I called the JHU admissions office and the lady I talked to said it would be perfectly fine if I sent an LOI, they would add it to my file, no problem:oops:

How does us not finding out about JHU acceptance/rejection till after may 15th work with that whole "you can only hold one acceptance" thing. If you hold an acceptance at another school and you find out late may you got in...doesnt that violate the rules? how soon do you have to decide post acceptance if you are going or not...?

ps my letter did say something like ...you wont hear from us in august ...and we will tell you where you are on the waitlist in late april....

You can only hold one acceptance, but you can hold positions on waitlists after May 15. They give you a little time to decide (is it a week?).

hmm i dunno if it varies for school to school, but emory's waitlist letter told me i would have only 24hours to decide...is there a standard time? I know you can't hold two for too long...

The # I've seen bounced around is 7-10 days, or about a week. I think it's unusual for any place to only give you 24 hours unless it's almost before classes start or they're not being particularly corteous with waitlisted applicants.
