Just curious if any of you had experience job hunting after only a 4 year AP/CP residency. Was it difficult to find groups who would consider you for a position without a fellowship? Again this is after 4 years, not on the 5 year plan with a built-in "surgpath fellowship" for the 5th year, just 4 years AP/CP.

Anecdotal evidence: It can be done. We had a graduate two years ago who managed this. She got a job with her (small) hometown private practice group. She had spent elective time with them, and they gave her an offer early in fourth year. My understanding is that it was a partnership track position (whatever that means) starting at almost $200K plus bonuses. As far as I know, no one else from my mid-size, upper/mid-tier residency has attempted finding a job sans fellowship. Given the discussions on SDN, I think unless you are somehow connected, this is a long shot.

we have addressed this ad nausem here, employers hire PEOPLE not credentials.

If you are person who doesnt need the fellowship the land the job, you will know it.

Just like what the Supreme Court said about porn: "You'll know it when you see it!"

You just don't see too many people looking for jobs without fellowships - it's hard to develop trends based on that. The problem with doing it is that you either have to accept a fellowship with the plan of backing out if you land a job, or you go all in and go for a job (because job applications almost always happen after the fellowship cycle). Fellowship applications start well over a year before starting the fellowship. Job searching is often around one year prior, sometimes more sometimes less.
