Practically speaking, how far in advance of residency completion should you begin actively seeking employment, assuming you have no viable job "leads" at hand?

I was conservative in my job search and started looking for a position in the latter half of my PGY-4 (~ March). Few places will have advertised positions this far in advance, but it is generally a good idea to 'get your name out there' and to start to network early. Also, local practices may allow you to 'shadow' them which gives you a great feel of private practice.
