Hi.

I'm interested in getting some experience in a pharmacy, and would like some advice.

The link in the FAQs for job shadowing etiquette does not work anymore, and either there is no further information on job shadowing, or I am not using the right keywords to bring up the right posts.

What exactly is job shadowing? Do you just follow the pharmacist and/or tech around while they do their jobs and watch? Asking questions are allowed, right? How can you prove that you've had so-and-so many hours of job shadowing experience? Do you have the pharmacist sign some sort of form? When shadowing, do you just do it for a few hours for one day at one particular pharmacy? Or do you get to return to the same pharmacy for a few more hours?

Also, anyone know if NY requires pharm techs to be certified? I can't seem to find information regarding that and I've been using Google as well. 😕 Can you get hired as a pharm tech without certification, get trained on the job, and then take the certification exam?

When volunteering in a pharmacy, what exactly are you allowed to do? Especially if you are required to be certified as pharm tech, can I assume that as a volunteer, you will not be expected nor allowed to do a pharm tech's duties? Are you then working as a non-paid cashier?

Thanks for any help and advice/suggestion you can offer.

I work as a tech in NY (long island) ... and I'm not certified -- so it's definitely not required ... I've been a tech for a little over two years, and I see little point in even taking the certification exam now (except for a minute pay raise) ...

I'm another NY tech and no, you don't need to be licensed or certified. I was trained on the job.

So far as what a volunteer does... we don't have any at my pharmacy, and I imagine the liability is so huge we'll never get one. I think probably if you are looking to volunteer, you'd want to find a hospital to volunteer at, and ask if they can place you in the pharmacy. No idea what you'd do there, though.

Good luck!

Thank you very much for the replies.

I had gotten a bit nervous after bringing up search results for pharm tech job openings that required a certified tech!
