Although medical school schedule is tough enough, are there jobs out there that a medical school student can handle? (for one who is not a genius but has reasonable time management skills)

I'm thinking of getting a job to earn a little lunch money... :)

I know that several people in my class taught for the various test review companies out there (like Kaplan) during first year. It didn't have to be MCAT review either - i know one person who was teaching for the GMAT and did not have a business background. It didn't seem to require a huge time commitment but brought in some extra money. You might look into that.

I have an MS-2 friend who tutors kids a few hours a week. I think he charges $30-40 an hour, private lessons (science and math, high school and college level).

Our school does not allow any employment unless specifically approved by the Dean for special cirumstances. Of course, you can certainly work durnig your breaks with now approval required. The reasoning is that you signed on for an intense 4 years of training, and that should be your job. :)

at my school, we can apply to be GSIs (graduate student instructors- fancy name for a TA) for a wide array of courses. i've taught the undergrad anatomy lab a couple of times now- it's a great way to keep up with the material, and i've found that the best way to learn is by teaching :)

also, i remember that when i interviewed at stanford, a bunch of students there also teach as TAs for undergrad courses as a sort of part-time job.

it's a nice way to help fun undergrads and make really good money. :)

I have a friend who mowed the greens for a golf course so he could play for free - not a bad idea if you play a lot.

I've known of some people who got jobs helping the lab techs draw blood before attendings went on rounds. They would go in at 5 am and draw blood until around 6-6:30 each morning. Pay was very good.

You may can find a job assisting one of the professors with his/her research.

I worked during my first and part of my second year without any problems. I worked a 12-hour shift on the ambulance on weekends.

oh and i totally forgot, but as a random thing, if you play an instrument, you should look into playing for weddings- i play the cello in a string quartet, and the going rate for wedding gigs in the bay area is $400+/hour- plus, it's really nice to watch a happy couple get married! :) (and wedding music is pretty easy, too!)

I know an MSII who works as a nurse and does research (pumps out a review pub in the field of neuroscience once every 3-4 months).

I work as a hospital supervisor two saturdays a month at a small rural hospital outside of town. I do at least a set of 46 questions while at work.
