The Department of Dermatology at Johns Hopkins Bayview has an opening for a Wound Fellow beginning July 1, 2011 at the Johns Hopkins Wound Center.
Applications are due before 4/1/2011.

1. The Wound care program is an integral part of the Department of Dermatology of the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions. The Wound Center is co-directed by Dr. Luis Garza, Assistant Professor of Dermatology and Dr. Jonathan Zenilman Chief of Infectious Disease. There are 2 Dermatology residents on rotation at Bayview at all times and they rotate through the wound center.

2. Responsibilities include:
a. Clinical care: Providing care for complex patients in a world renowned wound center, and cross-covering for general dermatology patients both with attending supervision.
b. Studying the microbial flora of wounds using PCR, metagenomic analysis, Fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH), and biofilm quantification and correlating these data with clinical parameters
c. Facilitating cooperation with Walter Reed Army Medical Center and the national Naval Medical Center in Bethesda in the Combat Wound Initiative
d. Interacting with the collaboration with The Center for Biofilm Research at Montana State University in Bozeman
e. Acting as a co-investigator in sponsored studies evaluating the effectiveness of novel therapies for wound healing.
f. Assisting novel investigator-initiated efforts at improving wound diagnostics and therapeutics, such as the use of autologous skin stem cell therapy for chronic wounds.

3. The Wound Fellow is a full participant in the teaching program in Dermatology and attends all major teaching conferences as a full Member of the Dermatology fellowship program. They have responsibilities of presenting at resident teaching conferences as other dermatology residents.

4. Individuals with a strong background in internal medicine are preferred and experience with IRB’s is considered a major plus.

5. The appointment is for a 2 year commitment only. Applicants unable to commit to 2 years should not apply. 2 years are necessary to successfully garner the grants, publications and awards for the next stage of your career. Although the previous 3 wound fellows have gone on to residencies in Dermatology there is no guarantee of a future residency position in dermatology.
