Quick question? Why does a predominatly African-American have to be singled out as a target of ridicule. These schools exist for a very important purpose. Unfortunately, that selfsame purpose deems that they will never garner very much prestige outside of the African-American community, but what's "prestige" anyway. It's pretty much the opinion of people you'll never know or ever meet. In fact, noone has the capacity of bestowing prestige upon you face-to-face.
But I digress, Meharry, Howard, and Morehouse have their share of problems, and sadly, the lower stats and ethnic background of their entering class dooms them to all sorts of stereotypes based on superficial and sometimes concocted information. Yet, that change their importance to American society. I remember reading in a past edition of " Best Medical Schools" from Princeton Review that Meharry and Howard had graduated 50% and 25% of the African American physicians in the United States. This may seem unrealistic in comparison to the demographic breakdown of today's schools, but considering that the physicians of today or composed of all graduationg classes from decades past, then this seems very logical. Also, it should be noted that the overwhelming majority of these physician seek employment in under-privelaged African-American neighborhoods where they are subject to all the lower finances and tougher working conditions that these areas carry with them. Considering the failed 3000 by 2000 campaign attempred by the AMA, this starts seeming very significant. Not-to-mention, the current surgeon general was one of Meharry's past presidents. One of the former director's of Health and Human Services was past president of Morehouse School of Medicine as well.
Jose, while I am happy that you are going to receive a medical education, ( Need more Hispanics in medicine, too
) don't bring yourself to point of ripping apart medical institutions. Especially, since they receive so much flack as it is. Think about it. How many times on this board alone have we seen people use these schools and sometimes the scools based in Peurto Rico as a model for "lower-tier" or " where not to go schools". Heck, you guys should visit the review.com message board sometimes. Those guys are horrible.
I wish you luck in school Jose, but calm it let's watch ourselves.

No, I would never go to such a place. I am sure you will have fun there next year
Although, I sense an underlying tone of condensation in your statement, I agree with you. Your purposes probably don't coincide with Meharry's therefore making it an undesirable school for you. Good luck to you wherever you are or will be!
In good faith,
