I got back a grade in my DNA manipulation class:
93.4 in a class that isn't curved
and it's an A-, and there's nothing I can do about it :-(

i'm not trying to whine or anything, but this is wicked frustrating to be so close to the boarder and never make it! Not once! This has happened too many times though. Orgo II, 2 more points on the final would have gotten the A, Physics II, I was 5 points shy. I have yet to make a 4.0 in any science class, not once in my college career, (nearly all of my sciences are Bs)

I honestly don't know how to gauge myself as a candidate with a 3.5 overall and 3.38 science in my junior year with my state school having an average GPA of almost 3.7. The deans are insinuating I should reconsider my career choice. My question is, is there any hope for me?

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD

...................that is all

I wouldn't listen to the dean... Curly, no one but you is going to get you into and through medical school. Keep your head up! 👍

Please comment on the "I Hate A-'s" thread! Well, a 3.5 is great. Don't reconsider your career choices - that's ridiculous. Take the MCATs and prove to them that you're a solid A student!

at first i thought this was a troll post, then i realized you're serious so i'll try to respond. Does your school have A+s? Most schools reconvert scores and they ar enot going to be concerned about A-s. So don't worry, you are still doing fine especially if the rest of your application is strong. All the best.

apply to texas schools. they dont differentiate bt A and A-. that is your only shot.

duuuuuuuuuuude i completely empathize +pity+ , see my "Who else hates those A- grades?" thread. I mean I'd have a 4.0 instead of a 3.9 if it weren't for those pesky A-'s +pissed+ . Hopefully Stanford and Hopkins will see through the .1 gpa deficiency and see the real person beyond the neurotic cover

chill the **** out and laugh about it!!!

I understand the need to distinguish students as much as possible... but I am an advocate of the all or nothing system (A,B,C, D, or F)... If I don't get that A... then I get a 3.0... which makes me try even harder for that 90

In Canada all you need as an 85 to get an A.

holllyy smokes. that is an insanely high average gpa. what state are you in??? I'd like to move there 😉

Yeah, so, it sucks but at some point there has to be a cut-off... being on the cusp is just bad luck. Hopefully next time you'll be on the other side of it 😀

LOL. are you kidding me?

you have a 3.5 overall and 3.38 bcpm? what are you complaing about?

boohoo, u got an A- in DNA manipulation class... come on now!!!

my school doesn't even give out minuses or pluses. even if you're a 89.999, you still get a B. and that grade would be as good as some slacker who has an 80.

"you have a 3.5 overall and 3.38 bcpm? what are you complaing about?"

why on earth does everyone keep telling me that it's not likely that i'll make it to med school with a 3.5, especially with my science GPA being so low??? Apparently, with a 3.38 I really ought to reconsider, or at least put off applying for a year so my senior grades are in. some people act like i'm screwed, others say i'm fine, i'm soooo confused! I've never done worse than a B in any class thus far (though nearly all of my sciences are solid Bs, so I'm mediocre across the boards). I'm not trolling, this is an honest question, people are telling me I should apply with my science GPA or at least reconsider, I'm just wondering if med schools accept a kid who is mediocre across the boards (and who's GPA each semester looks kind of like an echocardiogram, jumps in the fall and plummets in the spring)

Your school really sucks. Maybe you should move to Canada (haha, joke, sorry). I don't know what its like to go to a school with that type of system. A should always be 4.0. I wonder if med schools consider the injustice in all of this. MCAT is there to set a standard---okay, I finally get it (this goes out to quantummechanics), but you can't even get your foot in the door if your GPA is less than 3.5--even if you have a high MCAT score). Is it fair that John Doe from blah blah who in actuality earned a 90% A get a 4.0 versus Jane Doe who earned a 93 and get a 3.9 (or whatever it is)? No. but does adcom care? I don't know. It should be made mandatory that All colleges just stick with one dang scale--to be fair.

I personally hate threads that are like, "I made an A-, i'm going to strangle myself now." BUT, yours is different. I can understand your aggravation and frustration. Maybe you can write to the schools in which you're applying for and ask them what they think about your situation--don't be whiny, just ask them how they judge people with those scores. anyways, goodluck!

Some of the people in this thread are overly optimistic. Your adviser might be slightly pessimistic, but you certainly are below average. Really its up to your MCAT to determine whether you will be competitive academically. http://www.aamc.org/data/facts/2005/2005mcatgpa.htm

DO NOT LOOK AT WHAT OTHER PEOPLE ARE GETTING IN WITH. You cant tell this kid his GPA is average so he may have a hard time getting in. That is not how this process works. Trust me, your GPA is high enough to get into medical school. Just do well on the MCAT, and you should be fine. I personally think people with average GPA's fail to get into medical school because they failed to stand out and seperate themselves from the other applicants. Yes, having a 4.0 and a 35+ makes you stand out, but having a 3.5 is not detrimental. Just show some freaking personality and a real drive to become a doctor and help people(evident through your EC's and personal statement) and you should be fine.

agreed.

thanks guys, medicine what i've always wanted to do, the only way to find out if it i can make it is if i push, show my passion, do wicked awesome on the MCATs, and show the world i'll make an awesome pediatrician some day

There is tons of hope for you, so don't let the gunners on this forum get you down. You're gpa is just fine, especially if it shows an overall upward trend. Try to keep in mind that this process isn't all about stats, and even if you're like me and in the average joe boat, you still have a shot if everything else in your application is strong. If this is what you truly want to be doing with the rest of your life and your reasons for pursuing medicine are pure, then that will come through and you'll end up with an acceptance letter from a medical school in your hand.
