And, HOLY CRAP, was it difficult!

I can honestly say that was the most difficult test I have ever taken in my life. Out of about 100 questions, there were only 15 or so that I felt were obvious. There were about 60 or so that I felt were tough and the remainder were crazy-hard!

And 2 hours and 10 minutes was just not enough. I BARELY finished with seconds to spare. To wade through those entire clinical passages and tease out the hints that will give you an answer ain't easy!

Oh well, at least I can relax for a bit on Pscyh before my final grade comes back. 😉

I just took the medicine shelf last week and I agree it was difficult. It wasn't step 1 hard, but it was definately challenging.

It's worth a ton for our clerkship grade too, so needless to say i'm a little worried. Most people did not finish the test at my school.

don't sweat it. it's early in the year for you. i felt the same way after the exam but ended up getting a 99. just goes to show that ya never know... 🙂

yes I agree. the first shelf is always the hardest.

Did you guys use pretest medicine for it? I was told by 4th years to use that book because the shelf is similar in style to those questions.

pretest sucks. go with mksap 2.

I took the Medicine shelf yesterday, and it was definitely a different kind of animal than other shelfs (and the step 1). Questions are longer, more lab values are given, and classic presentations don't usually show up as often. After working the first 20 questions, I felt like nearly every patient was on a damn ventilator. Also, I'm pretty confident in saying 90% of the patients in the questions had either a cough, chest pain, joint pain, or a combination of the three. Good lord... I guess I should've studied a little more rheumatology.

I agree MKSAP 2 is the single best study tool invented in medicine. the questions are almost impossible, but you learn so much from the explanations it's unbelievable.

Our medicine department gave us all MKSAP 2 at the beginning of the clerkship. It rocked.
I'll definately be using it for step 2.

do as many questions as possible. pretest, MKSAP, A&L, etc. Agree with above that MKSAP is definitely the hardest but it is great prep for the shelf.
