Hey guys, this website, was given to me by a friend and I saw it again on another thread, but I haven't seen it in the pre-allo. It was developed by Duke and basically shows you what Specialty your are more inclined to do. Post your top 5 on here if you want :)

http://www.smbs.buffalo.edu/RESIDENT/CareerCounseling/interior.htm?self-assessment.htm

My top 5 were

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
Radiation Oncology
Neonatal - Perinatal Medicine
Colon and Rectal Surgery (yikes...hahaha)
Otolaryngology

Mine were:
PM&R
Rheumatology
Dermatology
Rad Onc
Allergy & Immunology

When I took that speciality test at http://www.med-ed.virginia.edu/specialties/, it listed my top choices as Derm, Rheumatology, and Diagnostic Rads. I guess my best fields would be Rheumatology and Derm, and I don't see myself doing Rheumatology. Looks like I won't be getting much sleep for the next 4 years...

So the lower numbers are the most compatible.
Here are mine:

Vascular and Interventional Radiology
Anesthesiology
Radiology - Diagnostic
Gastroenterology
Emergency Medicine

I don't think I want to do anything with radiology at all. I can't just look at x-rays all day. Emergency medicine sounds really interesting though.

Looks like I only want to do all of the stuff that's hard to get into-I guess that everybody else wants good work hours too. I think that this is a good evaluation tool. All of the stuff that I think that I'd hate was at the very bottom. Studying for the boards is gonna suck.

Lol, I have mine in the EXACT same order as you.

Funny, since I never would touch radiation oncology or physical med/rehab. I was hoping orthoped. surgery came out on top but oh well :(

Critical care and ER is something I'm very interested in. ER ended up on the higher end of my evaluation. Hmmm... Pathology ended up last for me and the funny thing is, I majored in Health Care Science/Forensic Science. I've always been asked if I want to do pathology and my response has always been, "No. I would rather deal with live people." So, this eval was pretty accurate with respect to my view on the pathology thing.

Just when I was thinking, "Wouldn't it be great if USNWR published a ranking list of the top specialities in medicine..."

No... seriously this is much better since you actually get to weight the criteria yourself.

My top five:

Pulmonary / Critical Care - 3.56 (!!)
Neurological Surgery - 7.94
General Surgery - 8.56
Cardiology - 9.19
Vascular Surgery - 9.65

Crazy since I hadn't considered most of these very much yet the alignment was shockingly low. I suppose I have a lot to consider over the next couple of years (and a nasty, nasty amount of board studying).

OP, thanks for the link. Maybe I should take another look at some of these.

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
Radiation Oncology
Neurology
Pediatrics
Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism

Weird because I'm not really interested in any of these. I am interested in Anesthesiology (#21), Psychiatry (#25) and my first choice Emergency Medicine was #38! Didn't expect that.

The Virginia test showed:

1 rheumatology
2 hematology
3 infectious disease
4 physical med & rehabilitation
5 radiation oncology

Hmm, maybe I'm thinking about the wrong specialties?

Those sound about right for me. Right now if I got asked in an interview what I might be interested in, I'd probably say EM, radiology, maybe something in genetics or nephrology. My top ones fit with my basic priorities: probably not interested in long term continuity of patient care, and I need a more fixed schedule so I can have kids. EM sounds so cool because you get to see all kinds of things, but on the other hand you're not an expert at anything (and I also have a strong aversion to vomit :p)

Anyway, it would be interesting to talk to some docs and find out if what they were considering going into before they started school was related to what they end up in.

I've been told I have "surgeon" personality (not necessarily compliment). This appears to agree.

 Ortho is in there. I don't know about plastics -certainly not interested in a lifetime of breast implants but reconstructive perhaps. At least it knew to leave out general/colorectal surgery. I skipped all my GI physiology lectures to surf.
