Just got my grades back, not feeling so great - help?

Hey everyone, I just completed my summer session and ended up with a B in both bio 2 and physics 2. I'm really bummed out because obviously anything less than an A won't help. I'm on path to apply to med school next June and between now and then I have two semesters of a full time course load left, as well as my MCAT.

I've posted my story here before, and I have A's in Orgo 1 and cell bio, as well as my chem labs, but B's in both physics, and now, bio 2.

I don't feel so great because I really hoped to at least get an A in the bio class. I'm trying to aim for an A in bio 3 to prove I can get it, as well as tougher courses like biochem and physio.

I really want to know what those on here might think about the B's on my transcript, especially as a non traditional. Its hard for me to gauge my "chances". My cumulative will end up being a 3.47 while my science gpa will end up being a 3.7. I realize my cgpa is below average and my sgpa may just be on average, but my biggest concern is the sprinkling of B's in my "post bacc part" of my academic record. I realize there's nothing I can do with my first degree which was in business.

Currently I work in an ER part time as well as volunteer at a hospice and a children's hospital.

I definitely agree with you. I like the "get up and go" attitude, and not the "sulk about it" attitude. I just don't want to end up always making excuses for myself and keep saying "next time I'll do better". I would want to know if the B's I have as a post-bacc have sort of sank my chances by a lot, though not trying to sound over dramatic at all.

I got Bs in both Gen. Chem classes. Don't beat yourself up to much. It is normal not to be the A student every single time. Being on SDN will warp your view of that since most people feel shame of posting their Bs and you'll hear only from those with As. Remember, hundreds try the non-trad route and fail, but you won't be hearing from them here. With a 3.7 science, you're still ahead of the game.

I realize SDN can really alter the way you think about medical school admissions - it is for sure, very competitive but sometimes reading about it on here seems a bit toxic! I just had really hoped to do well during my "second chance". I want to make sure I make more A's in the next two semesters, if not all!

I hope you make it so that you can look back and laugh at about how petty you were about getting 'Bs'. They don't help but they aren't exactly indicators of a lack of aptitude.

I think other people on here have said it best. Just go over everything, see where you went wrong to the borderline point of being OCD and go from there.

This may be a bit of a silly question but what do you feel threw you off in those courses? I'm in a similar situation where I just finished a solid 28 credits of bcpm and got a 3.07 ( ugh...) and I'm trying to reassess my study short comings too. The only silver lining was that I beat the class average of all those classes combined which came out to 2.62 (which doesn't matter for jack so far as adcoms are concerned obviously)...

I also hope one day i can look back and laugh at my B's. Anyway, so what threw me off is 1) i hate physics and am not as angry at my B there, though i do wish i did more practice problems, and 2) i underestimated the final in my bio class - i studied plenty for a cumulative final, but the final itself consisted of 80% of the current information, which i did NOT allocate enough time to. i also think i just didn't push myself on weekends, thinking i could handle it. bad, bad mistake there.

I do believe that showing the "upward trend" that everyone speaks of is helpful, but as an older/non traditional applicant, I really did want to stop the whole "i'll do better next time", and just do better!

I'm right there with you, I loved physics. Physics 1 = trebuchet. Physics 2 = rail gun. Try to hate physics after you realize that! It can't be done.

But seriously, if you hate physics, you're probably focusing too much on getting the answer and not enough on how you get there. Try looking at physics problems as logic puzzles that involve physics concepts. It makes it a lot more fun.

But seriously, if you hate physics, you're probably focusing too much on getting the answer and not enough on how you get there. Try looking at physics problems as logic puzzles that involve physics concepts. It makes it a lot more fun.

I agree this was probably my biggest problem - I already completed both physics 1 and 2, but, I definitely am looking at all my classes with the same outlook. Instead of just getting the answer right, I'm going to actually try to get the topic, and let the learning part come more naturally. That sort of perspective should also help me out on the MCAT, since physics will most definitely be on there!

Rather a stretch of a statement. Easy up on yourself. You didn't torpedo and grab a C- or something.

If your MCAT is good you will probably have a shot at some places.

Also, a GPA in your range with a good MCAT would also be a good candidate for an SMP with a solid linkage agreement. A few say they guarantee admission if you meet certain standards. These are often fairly high, but doable.

I know that would add a year to the plan, but you could apply concurrently SMP with med school apps. This would give you a backup should you not get accepted the first time out.

Just saying that a couple B's are not the end of the world. Just don't make a habit of it

I want to make this my signature on SDN. Many, many people get into med school each year without a 4.0 GPA. Somewhere along the lines there is a B, or a few, tucked into those transcripts.
