Just got my official AMCAS GPA and I thought I was gonna get sick. I knew my undergrad wouldn't be good but dang.

undergrad BCPM: 2.74 🙁
undergrad AO: 3.14
undergrad total: 2.98

postbacc BCPM, AO, total: 4.00

graduate BCPM: 3.85
graduate AO: 3.97
graduate total: 3.95

Hopefully my MCAT will pull me through (36O), oh well! Wish me luck!

happens to the best of us.

looks like a solid improvement though, it will definitely count for something, especially with your MCAT.

how many hours on your post-bac?

Not that many, only 25. I had to take orgo and bio and the labs.

I am sure you know this but make sure your PS focuses on the trend and explains away the rough start. The tricky part is doing this without wasting too much time on the negative so you can discuss the positive.

Are you applying broadly?

Good luck!

This is the part where I get to make you feel better.

Undergrad BCMP -- 1.6 (nine math credits and 3 credits in Ecology. No chem, physics, or Bio)

Undergrad AO -- Won't apply till next year so I don't know. I did the BCMP calculation myself

Undergrad total without post-bacc -- 2.7 by my calculations

Post Bacc BCMP -- 4.0 (40 credits including all my med school prereqs)
Post Bacc AO -- 3.7 (just one Religion class with a B+)

No grad school. No MCAT yet. Any tips on how to score that 36?

plan on devoting at least 2-3 months studying almost full time. I took 2 months out of a summer and did nothing but MCAT. Also, if you aren't good at it, practice your math. Good math and memorization of equations is the easiest way to a high score in physical science (I think at least).

In any case, I am applying VERY broadly, so this should be interesting. Got verified this afternoon and I'm getting a pile of secondaries. Ugghhhh... here we go!

still a good trend. you ought to get a lot of attention.

Lets just hope its the right kind of attention. Not the, "Hey Bob! Take a look at this kid! What an ass, can you believe he thought he had a shot here?" attention. 😀

Good advice. This is likely to come up in interviews as well, so be sure that you can explain it and be convincing about your renewed dedication and focus.

where on the amcas app does it give your gpa? i can't find mine haha.

Use the "Print Application" link to have AMCAS generate a summary which you can use to take a look at your GPA breakdown.

a B+ is a 3.7 at your school? I think its more like a 3.3 on AMCAS. lol sorry

wait, so post bac taken just to get in the required pre-reqs doesn't go into the AO and BCMP gpa? I'm taking two courses of orgo. what if one is replacing a deficient grade taken in ug?

well he had a 4.0, so they're both 4.0. unless he took no non-science courses, then he'd have a 4.0 BCMP and a - AO.

What do you mean by 'replace'? AMCAS will consider both grades.

As I understand it, post-bacc is considered differently from undergrad. Because you're better than a senior... you've already graduated.

I wasn't sure how to do it. I marked those premed reqs as post bacc because I already had finished my undergrad (and masters) and was taking them at a different school. I had contemplated putting them as my senior year, but I thought that might be shady and I was trying to be honest. Maybe it'll work, maybe it won't, I guess we'll see.

Ok, I know it doesn't "replace" it, but it's to make up for that deficiency. Ok, so my question should be "do a pre-reqs" taken the summer after graduating count in your AMCAS BCPM gpa?" I don't even know what happens to post bac courses taken; where do they come into play? Honestly i haven't looked at the application yet to know how it's listed; can anyone help me out? Thanks!

postbac is included in your undergrad gpa calculations

You know I spoke with some adcom members (out of curiosity myself) and they told me to either only talk about this VERY briefly or not mention it at all. They said that they can read the application and its clear what happened, I FINALLY grew up and decided to do well.

Any thoughts on this?

Adcom's know what they want much better than pre-meds. I would highlight how you have matured and evolved but I don't think I would waste valuable characters on explanations for previous mistakes. Like you have said, your application will say it all.

Right Right. IF that IS the reason (grew up and got my crap together) don't dwell on it. If there was a real REASON for our slow start, you do need to make them understand. Had to work a ton to afford school, couldn't afford to move out and so commuted 90 minutes one way and hardships should be pointed out so they can understand the reason for the grades. BUT, gloss over them quickly so you can spend most of the time on how fabulous you are NOW. ~This advise was also from an Adcom, but their advice varies greatly.

So the secondaries are coming in and I thought I'd let people know I got them from:

VCU
EMVS
U-Alabama

All these schools screen, and I still got their secondaries. Just goes to show that GPA isn't EVERYTHING.

BoilerWolverine,

How long did it take for you to get verified?

I submitted AMCAS on 7/5, and was verified on 7/17. I got those secondaries yesterday, 7/26, so about 3 weeks from submission.

so a 3.3 is a B+ and a 3.7 is an A-; what is a 3.5? There's such a difference between 3.3 and 3.7.

Thats right, 3.5 doen't exist as a discrete grade

actually, A- is 3.67, and B+ is 3.33, so the difference is a little less without rounding.
