So all of us sdn males out there know not to use laptops on our laps but what about Ipods that have a pretty powerful battery in them as well. They may not be as dangerous but if you listen to music for 12 hours and it sits in your pocket that entire time do you think some damage could be done? Not as much damage as a laptop but you have to consider expose time, who uses a laptop on their lap for that long.

I'm an evolutionist, I've to look out for my sperm line. 😉

What is the reasoning behind not using the laptop dbutz?

well if putting a laptop on your lap is bad for your sperm, then hell....I must be infertile. Doh!

My guess is that it's cause of the heat? Apple laptops are notorious for how hot they get. Subjecting your boys to high temps supposedly weakens them.

If you're concerned about Ipod heat, get a nice case for it. I don't imagine there's much radiation from one. You have more chances of a cell phone doing damage than an Ipod.

Wildone.......i figured the whole heat reasoning.......got confused about the battery comment from the OP. I thought he was gonna tell us how there is radiation from the battery or something. As for cell phones.......i think we will see their side affects in 5-10 years. I don't think its gonna be pretty folks.

The reason that laptops cause sperm damage is due to heat, but not because of the heat of the laptop. Using a laptop requires one to sit with their legs closely together to balance the laptop. Your "boys", which usually have some place to go when one is sitting relaxed, are stuck between your legs with no place to dissipate heat. Note that optimal temperature to create sperm is slightly below body temp, an equilibrium that is destroyed by leg-together laptop posture.

And don't worry, my friends - the "damage" is only temporary. Stop placing that damn computer on your lap and your friends will be swimming in no time!

Good I can use my Ipod in peace now. I had the misconception that there was some permanent damage done from the battery... I should do my homework 😎

hahaha funny postings here

well, my mom keeps on buggin me not to place my laptop in my lap. she says its mainly coz of the radiation (she's a doc).

all devices with electric circuits generate electric and magnetic fields, which can effectively disalign molecules in our body or something like that.

side: if ipods are bad, then how about cell phones???

I'm totally fine with temporary sterility. In fact, I welcome it.

If this were the case, then anyone thinking of going into radiology and working with MRI would be screwed - it generates a heck of a lot bigger magnetic field than a PC or an Ipod.
Actually, a lot of studies have been done, and a lot of lawsuits have been brought, relating to people living near power lines who suggest that their various illnesses/cancers were caused by this (electro magnetic radiation). However the scientific consensus to date is that electro-magnetic fields pose no such danger to human organisms.
As for the laptops, a recent study discussed on local TV news indicated that it is the laptop's unusually high heat that causes low sperm count if used on the lap (not as a prior poster suggested, the leg together position). They recommended using it on a table. 🙄 And as for Ipods -- get an arm band and keep it away from your boys if you are worried...

Yeah it's all about heat. That's why the scrotum is all about regulating the temp and why there is the whole "shrinkage" thing in cold temps. That's also why you aren't supposed to sit in a hot tub for too long - the scrotum's attempts at regulating the temp are futile in a 105 F tub of water.

Thats so funny that this topic just came up. As I was about to read it my mom is yelling at me that I wont be able to have children because my ovaries are being radiated. Is this just for guys or do girls have to worry about putting it on a table as well??

Hmmm... The study that I read clearly stated that the temperature problem is NOT due to laptop heat, but to leg positioning. I honestly think it could be a combination of both, but I still tend to think that leg positioning is the greater culprit. For laptop heat to cause the problem, it would have to travel through several inches of thick tissue and fluid to reach the testicles, and I don't know about other devices, but I sure as hell know that my laptop (Dell 1000) doesnt produce that kind of heat.

But really, in the long run, it doesnt matter. Less sperm means less likelihood of pregnancy if that damn pill fails... 😉

You are both right:
Sheynkin Y, Jung M, Yoo P, Schulsinger D, Komaroff E. Increase in scrotal temperature in laptop computer users. Hum Reprod. 2005 Feb;20(2):452-5. Epub 2004 Dec 09.

CONCLUSIONS: Working LC in a laptop position causes significant ScT elevation as a result of heat exposure and posture-related effects.

All of us are going to have FLKs, so we might as well just accept it 😉.

Being a rad tech's assistant, I've become resigned to that fate.

Well, think of it as added contraception!

I saw a report on this topic on the news, which did say it was because of the heat generated by the laptops, and when the laptop is on your lap for long periods of time, the heat gets to your junk down there...best thing to do if there isnt a table around is to tuck them away and keep your legs shut real tight, unless of course you want the contraceptive effects!
