does anybody have a feel for how important the different sections are?
for example, does a high biology or physics cancel out a lower verbal?
and vice versa?

There's a rumor that verbal is more important, but I don't think there's really much of a difference and if there is, it probably varies by school. I doubt they advertise it much either.

Both previous posters are correct. VR purportedly has the highest correllation between success during the preclinical years of medical school, and therefore acceptance rates.
Schools look for balanced scoring on all sections of the mcat. The exception probably being if your lowest score is double digits. 15's in PS and BS do not make up for a 5 in VR.

yeah...I think that 8,8,8 looks better than 10,10,4 even though the totals are equal.

Verbal tends to be quoted as the hardest and there's a rumor that no one can substantiate that it is more predictive of success in medical school, but that's anyone's guess.

10s across the board makes you, in general, an attractive applicant.

There is a 90% correlation between a double digit Verbal score and passing the USMLE step-1 on the first try. So it is important. I agree with all others you are most competative with double digit scores in all areas. So P:12, V:9 B:12 is nice but P:11 V:11 B:11 is probably better.

Remember that the MCAT is not testing what you know but what you do with what you know. Verbal puts everyone on the same playing field because general knowledge is not required. It truly tests your thinking ability and not game show esq. facts.
