Please PM the essay prompts when available and I will update this.

Good luck to everyone applying!

If you apply to KCUMB on AACOMAS, you will automatically be considered for both campuses.

Will this campus screen applicants like the main campus?

I spoke with an Admissions Rep a little while back, and she told me the screening process will be the same for both campuses. Also, she mentioned that there may be some leniency on the strict cut offs if you apply super early and depending on the competition.

Best thing I've heard/read from multiple others-- if you pass 2 of the 3 screens then apply.

Sorry for the silly questions but other than the GPA screen of 3.25 what's the other two screen?

Another silly question, are resources available at KC open to Joplin students too? Such as research etc.

To answer your first question, the 3 screens are: 1) cGPA, 2) sGPA, and 3)MCAT

To answer your second question.... I dunno.

Is the cut off for CGPA and SGPA 3.25? What about the MCAT? Thank you!

Accepted here last week! Where is everyone at on this thread??

Hi! Accepted here and highly considering...anyone have any insight on the surrounding area/hospitals? I am from California and have never been as south in Missouri as Joplin!

^ exactly what he said, sentence for sentence. I am from Los Angeles (now in the Bay area). Fell in love with KCU main campus, but I am not sure about Joplin

exactly the same here(LA->SF)...i guess we will all feel at home together lol

Hey guys, currently live/work in Joplin. Been here about two years so far. Got accepted here and ATSU so I'm still deliberating but leaning towards KCUMB.

Joplin is about 50k people but serves roughly 400k in the surrounding area. Two main hospitals - Freeman Hospital and Mercy, both are level 2 traumas. Nearest level 1 is springfield an hour away.

Joplin has a ton of great hole in the wall, non-chain restaurants. There's community events monthly. As far as entertainment/night life if you're coming from LA you'll definitely be disappointed. There's a few good bars here in town. Downstream casino is about 10 minutes down highway 44. But if you have a free weekend and want entertainment, Joplin is about 2.5 hours from KC and 2 hours from Tulsa, OK/Fayetteville, AR. so it is ideally located. (Though with how rigorous the program seems you probably won't have many of those)

Not sure what else I can answer but I'll be happy to when I check back later.

I've lived in Joplin for almost 24 years, feel free to ask me any questions about the area!

thanks for that info! So do you think Joplin has a more southern type culture or midwest? I know they said at the KCU interview that there are a lot of outdoor activities in the area as well right? And just curious, how cold does it get in the winter?

Joplin is definitely midwest type culture. We don't quite hit the southern hospitality mark, but we do serve some diabetically sweet tea. There are a decent amount of outdoor activities in the immediate area. Wildcat Glades is one of the most popular. We have a lot of newer parks in the area as well, one right across the road from the school. Alternatively, we are about 2 hours from Devil's Den State Park in Arkansas which is a beautiful area for backpacking and hiking. For winter coldness, it really depends on the year. The coldest I remember it ever getting was -15 F, but it normally stays above 0 in the coldest months.

Accepted! Any of you other accepted people to Joplin campus know when deposits are usually due and how much they are? The email said they'll let me know in a week, but just curious if some of you that are further along know? :)

Hey Drandall92, just got an email today with that info. $1,000 by January 9th and another $1,000 on March 1st.

Hey Guys. Just accepted to Joplin. I was just wondering if there will be an emphasis on rural medicine or will it still be possible to specialize?

You can still specialize. KCUMB typically matches 70-71℅ into primary care but a third or so specialize. I think there will be a rural track like they have at the KCUMB campus but no you aren't pidgeon-holed into rural medicine if you accept the offer to the Joplin campus.

I'm an ambassador here for KCU and we have been getting some great info regarding the Joplin Campus. With two very strong hospitals nearby with one carrying GME in multiple departments you will have the opportunity to learn and grow much far beyond rural medicine. In fact, there is no emphasis on rural medicine so to speak in the aspect of being the only doc and med student in a town far away.

We have been informed that currently 60% of the match last year was primary cary placement and will continue to fall to the 50% and 45%.

how are we supposed to get health insurance through the school at joplin?

I have a question for the people who live in Joplin.

What are good areas to live in? I was told that Joplin has relatively high crime rates (and that's for alot of cities, not specifically Joplin). Ideally, I would like to find a place near the university and it's relatively safe to be in.

Where did you hear that Joplin has high crime rates? If anything, KC is much more dangerous than Joplin in the way of violent crimes. The school should let you know of various housing in joplin.

Well, crime rates is high in a lot of cities including Los Angeles where I am from. But we just compared the number of crimes in KC and Joplin, and surprisingly Joplin has more even though they have less people (ex. Kansas City has ~6,000 crimes/per year for 100k people and Joplin has ~7,400 crimes/per year for 100k people).

I've never heard of Joplin being more dangerous than KC but that is crazy stats (can you source where you got those numbers?).

If it's concerning I would definitely call school admin and see how they can address your concerns.

It is not a huge deal. I am just wondering why Joplin has so much crime for a smaller population. I am not familiar with Joplin. That's why I am concerned.

I just googled "crime rates in (city)." One source is from areavibes.
Kansas City: http://www.areavibes.com/kansas+city-mo/crime/
Joplin: http://www.areavibes.com/joplin-mo/crime/

I am from Joplin and lived in KC for several years for work and I would say that I, personally feel much safer in Joplin. If you look at those stats, although the total crime in KC is lower, the violent crime rate (per 100k) in KC is much higher. I would say that much of the "petty" crime that gets reported in Joplin doesn't get reported in KC. That's just my take.

I got accepted into the Joplin campus, and I'm starting to look for a place to live.
It seems like Joplin doesn't really have a lot of student apartments, mostly houses.
Do you have any suggestions on where to find apartments?
Thanks!

^ my question exactly. I most likely would like to live where all you guys live. There's a thread on the KCU fb group about it already.

I'm late to the cycle. I have a 493 MCAT, 3.77 combined and science GPA, and really good EC's. do I have a chance this late in the cycle? Have there been others with his low of MCAT score who have been accepted

This is extremely late in the cycle and I'm pretty sure KCU has one of the more strict screens compared to most DO schools. I would save the money and really consider an MCAT retake.

☹️ unfortunately that was my retake. I had previously taken the old version...oh well

Last cycle, I got waitlisted with my 494 and 3.7 graduate GPA (from KCU's program). This cycle I retook the MCAT and got a 501 and I was accepted to the KC campus. Joplin may have a slightly less strict cutoff but I don't think anyone's gotten in to either campus with anything lower than 498 but they had a higher GPA to compensate. (Feel free to contradict me on the specifics)

I'd highly recommend retaking the MCAT and reapplying for next cycle in June.

According to the KCU-KC forum, there are currently 300+ people on the waitlist just to get an interview. As far as I know, all the interview spots have been taken and they're pretty much interviewing for the waitlist.

This last retake makes 5 times I've taken the MCAT. If this is your dream, don't give up. Do what you can to improve your application before the next cycle and retake the MCAT. If anyone understands how horrible it is, it's me. PM me if you want more details, etc.

Good luck! May the odds be ever in your favor.

Does anyone know if there is going to be a date scheduled soon to visit the joplin campus?

I emailed and asked. I think it is just one day. They said they will send out a formal invitation in the next few weeks.
