Are there alot of tornado's in KC?

Well, Yes and no. While there is always a threat of tornado during the spring early summer, we don't have a lot of them that actually affect anybody. The worst we had in a long time was almost four years ago. That night, May 5, 2003 (I know cuz that was the night I graduated from college) there were something like 6 that touched down in Kansas City region. One of them devastated a good part of Liberty, MO including the college William Jewel. Anyway, what I'm trying to say is that while it is a possibility for tornados to come, it shouldn't affect a decision as to whether to come to the midwest or not... tornadoes are rarely like movies depict them. Its funny, I feel the same way about earthquakes as others do about tornados, but when I talk to people from California, they tell me earthquakes are rarely a big deal. Everything is sensationalized until experienced.

haha, good idea. Actually, I'm guessing the reason someone asked is cuz we had some tornados go through yesterday. Although the sirens went off where I live, I saw nothing more than rain. I haven't heard about a lot of damage though, so I'm guessing there wasn't much.

I would just add that having grown up here and lived here all my life, I will hopefully never own a home without a basement or some sort of shelter.

That being said, I'm nearly 30, and I've never even seen a tornado.

NR, the rate at which they were blowing the sirens on Sunday was ridiculous...and Sunday had the most potential for an organized tornado since that big one you talked about.

Just so happens that storms/meteorology/and a little teeny bit of chasing is another geek hobby of mine.

Oh, just don't live in a trailer...they are like magnets for tornadoes.

I still haven't fixed my hail damage from last year so the hail we got didn't bother me too much! For some reason the storm line went exactly north and south of our town the other night. We just got a good thunderstorm.

I've grown up in the midwest also. I have seen plenty of tornadoes but have only been hit by one bad and that was when I was in my highschool band room. And if it counts, one knocked a tree on our neighbors house but it missed ours. (edit: probably was just straight winds) We lose a lot of tree limbs every storm season. (edit: But they are usually just from the wind not an actual tornado).

I wouldn't let tornadoes keep me from the midwest (but I too am afraid of earthquakes and also hurricanes)! I think it is most common to have storm damage to homes, but not as commonly from tornadoes and rarely to people. And it is almost always minor damage (like hail damage or picking up tree limbs). Usually if people get hurt, it is people in trailors or that are just being stupid (like chasing or running in their cars). You have to respect storms and take cover. Don't worry the news guys will let you know.

I think the premature sirens are because they are setting them off when they see rotation on the doppler instead of actually one being spotted. It's kind of good because it gives you time to prepare but when I was young if we heard the sirens you put your head between your legs and kissed your a$$ goodbye! Now you go stick your head out the window and see if you can see/hear it coming (which goes back to the above about people being stupid).

My advice, try for a basement/storm shelter. Never live in a trailor in tornado alley, you'd be safer in your car or laying in a ditch. Actually the weather man was telling the people getting hit the other night to evacuate their trailors and lay down on the ground. But I read later that some girl had her trailor land on her. craziness

Storm season... exciting and scary!!

Ambernikel, so hail damage is inevitable? I have a old BMW I that I love. Since I'm living at CT theres no garage parking...not even a place to wash my car; Shocking!! Can you tell I'm a car guy? 😉 I guess its not advisable to bring a nice car if its gonna stay outside?

I actually live in Lawrence where the worst of the damage in kansas was. I go to KU and we even got a day off of school. The day off was pretty nice. None of you really need to worry about this too much. It is all overplayed in the media. The damage here was not as bad as they make it sound. I can say I would much rather go to school near tornadoes than hurricanes. I went and interviewed at NOVA two weeks after hurricane wilma and I have never seen damage like that in my life. the damage in florida from that was a million times worse than what we saw here in Lawrence this past weekend. KU closed mainly just for safety reasons, they didnt want shingles falling from roofs onto people. the trees that were going to fall were already down and just needed to be cleaned up. Walking on campus today you could hardly tell that anything happened, except for the few pieces of metal roofing laying around and some bleachers on the practice football field torn apart. These tornadoes arent nearly as bad as they sound, unless it happens to hit directly at your house, then it is all about luck. whereas with a hurricane everyone is f$%ked. let me know if you have any more questions about what happened in lawrence this weekend.

I wouldn't call hail damage inevitable. I've never had hail damage to my cars and we park outside. Just get comprehensive insurance. That covers hail damage. I actually wish I'd get bad hail damage. Then I could get other things cleaned up on my car for free 😉 Then again, if someone stole it, I could get it replaced. Maybe I should start leaving the key in it, unlocked. j/k

I'm actually from the Midwest too-but in Northern Indiana. I've seen small twisters above the Lake (Lake Michigan). There is a myth around here that there is a low probability of getting hit by one because of the Lake--don't know how true that is. We've had our share of thunderstorms, high winds, hail and all that but we have not been hit my a tornado in my life time. The winter here sucks BIG TIME, sub-zero temperatures, lots of lake effect snow, it can get pretty nasty. I hate knee deep snow!! From what I understand, in general, I should not have to endure this in KC--is that true?

Yeah I'm sorry, I mainly meant that if you get damage from storms its usually just some hail damage or tree limbs down. But I also don't think hail damage is inevitable. In fact, I don't believe any of my old cars ever had it. Just my brand new one! And most insurances will cover it. I should have claimed it last year but my husband talked me out of it. I don't know why. We had extraordinarily large hail last year. I have a picture somewhere I'll have to find it and post it.

I think it depends on where you live too. Even within my town, which is 3 hours south of KC, we have spots in town that always get hit harder than others. And the town south (and the towns west of us in KS) of us usually gets hit with the tornadoes while they pass us by. knock on wood, although that is not always the case.

I really wouldn't worry about tornadoes in KC. They're exciting to talk about, but it is very rare for them to hit and hurt people or even cause extensive damage. Like I said before, if people get hurt its usually in trailors or someone being stupid. And when you see an area with nothing but small debris it's usually a blown away trailor park.
I mean if an F4 hits your house directly then it was just your time. But how often does that happen???
I think KUmark has a lot of good points. I'd much rather be hit by a tornado than a hurricane.

The winters are definately cold, no doubt about it, but it doesn't sound near as bad as where you're coming from. Snow build-up can be deep, such as in the parking lot, but I have yet to see the actual snow ever get above knee-deep. Watch, now it'll probably happen just because I said that. 😛

I got my letter yesterday! I am so excited!!!!!! (now I just have to part with $2000)

I am from KC (southern johnson county), so if anyone has questions about where to live, feel free to ask.

I lived in KC when I was single and now that I am married, so I have seen both ends of possible living locations!

Thanks!

Hi all,

I just jumped on this thread for curiosity's sake and after reading a bit, thought I'd throw this out there. I'm a second year at KCUMB. I was planning on staying out here for my rotations this coming year but recently decided to go out to Newark to be closer to family. As a result, the condo that my mom recently bought is going to be empty and I wanted to see if any of you 2010-ers would be interested. It's a great condo, right on the Country Club Plaza. It's a one bedroom with hard wood floors, new stainless steel appliances, a pool and a parking spot - perfect for a couple. I've been in KC for two years and have always lived on the Plaza. It's a great area, close to the shops and shopping and definitely a good escape from school. As any larger city, you have to be smart and aware, but I've never had any problems with crime. I know I'm shamelessly using this site but I thought I might be able to help someone out.

I included the link below with pictures and virtual tours.

http://www.heartlandmlsweb.com/Reports.asp?CMAID=3930829&T=10:36&Tmp=mp

We're looking for $850/month. It may sound a bit pricey but split between two people, it's a great deal. Just let me know if you want more info or if you have any questions...

Thanks guys!

I just got an acceptance at KU today... Now I'm trying to decide what to do. I love OMM and KCUMB, but am a bit scared to choose KCUMB in case I should choose to go into reconstructive surgery... (may do primary care, may do reconstructive surgery or may change my mind completely 😛 )
Anyone have any thoughts?

well about 50% of the class specializes in something so keep that in mind.

I got approved to live at CT!! They actually called my work and references to check up on me. Pretty serious stuff. 😱

Does anyone know what our booklist will be? Or is there a system where we can buy books from third/fourth years?

To be honest, I really think that in the end, your board scores are gonna dictate what type of residency you will match into...and remember, DOs have their own specialties and sub-specialities too.

Just go to the school you feel will suit you the best! Good Luck in making your decision, and congrats on another acceptance!

Changing the subject, I just received my matriculation receipt today.

~Noelle~

Hey! I remember that one of the ambassadors was a twin - he goes to KCUMB and his twin brother goes to KU. If you could get into contact with him/his brother, that might be helpful. Unfortunately, I do not know his name. Does anyone know who I'm talking about? I wonder if the admissions office could give you his e-mail since he is an Ambassador. I wouldn't think that he would mind, since it seems like everyone I met was willing to bend over backwards to answer my questions or find someone who could. I was somewhat in the same situation (choosing bet an osteo school I loved and an MD school I liked)....For me, I had to go with my gut. I ranked what was most important to me in a med school and then which school accomplished that the best. I chose the one that seemed to make me happy and would help me become the doctor that I want to be (both specialty wise - which is very likely to change over the years - and in other not so tangible ways). Everybody has different a perspective though and different goals. I'm not trying to sway you either way. Good luck with your tough decision. They're both great schools 🙂

Congrats to everyone recently accepted!!!

noelle: my advice would be the same as everyone else's. I chose between two DO schools (but I've always had a strong desire to be a DO). I just made a list of priorities for both my family and my career and made the best decision I could. Both KU and KCUMB are great schools so that will be a hard decision to make. I'd also say go with your gut a little. I mean if you feel more at home then you're gonna do better which means better board scores and more opportunities to specialize as desired. I'm sure either way you go, you will do great! Good luck!!

Another question I have.

For you out of staters with cars. Are ya'll gonna register your cars in missouri or how will that work?

I was wondering the same thing. Also, don't we out-of-staters get like 6 mos on our out-of-state drivers licenses before we have to get MO ones?

I think so. But if you are a student you don't necessarily become a Missouri resident, do you? I may be mistaken but I believe you can still keep your out of state tags as long as you claim Missouri as a temporary residence while you are a student.

i believe that is the case. in undergrad i have lots of friends that are o-u-s and kept there same license plates. i don't think that it is a very important issue. i agree with amber though that you need to indicate that mo is your temporary state.

on a different note, where are you living amber? i think i'm gonna live in ct, don't really feel like commuting and want to be around other med students.

I'm gonna live in North KC. I'm SO excited about it. We went and checked it out and its perfect for me and only 10-15 min from the school. I'll be up there this week to complete my application for it. I had been leaning towards CT but this opp just came open and I couldn't resist.

Sorry if this sounds silly, but I was born and raised in Indiana, who do I claim temporary residence to--the Bureau of Motor vehicles?

hey gang; so for all of ya'll that are living in CT, have ya'll decided if you're gonna have a roommate or not? I don't know if I want one, however my main reason to live with someone is the lower rent.

Raven Feather, I would assume so.

I have no idea about the details. But I'd assume it's how you do your state taxes and personal property taxes. Like when you renew your tags or whatever and maybe the address on your license. I really am not completely sure.

Hello,

I have to take a genetics course before August! I have found a couple, but I work full-time and I don’t really have the money to quit 2 months before schools starts (since we don’t we our fin aid until Aug!!!).

I was just curious if KCUMB has let anyone substitute another course? I am looking at Cell and Molec Bio at JCCC. It will be 4 nights a week of class/lab, but at least I can keep working!

Thanks!

your best bet would be to call the school and speak to the dean or an admissions director and explain your situation, none of us can give you an adequate answer, so i'd advise you do that. Good luck! 🙂

Hello,

I don’t have kids, but I have a husband and 2 black labs. I wanting to substitute genetics for 2 reasons

1) I am having a hard time finding a summer course in genetics. There is one offered at KU, but admissions there said it will be full by the time I am allowed to enroll, since I am not a current student there. I am working on this issue with them!

2) I have been out of school for several years and in the pharmaceutical world! I have a house, bills etc….it wouldn’t be problem once fin aid comes in, but that doesn’t happen until Aug. I don’t want to let my mortgage get behind etc.

I talked to KCUMB and they said there is an online genetics course at University of Minn. This might be a great option. I was hoping to get back into the classroom (even if it is at night), just to get back into the swing of things.

But if the substitution isn’t accepted, I am going to do genetics online! If you go to the University of Minn website and look under distance learning, you will find the class!

Let me know if anyone hears of another class! Thanks!

I wish I had known about the online course. 🙁 I'm currently taking genetics at a community college which is a borefest. I guess I should've asked more questions beforehand.

Sorry when you said you were working full time, I assumed it was at the GAP or something. Are you in pharm sales or clinical trials? I"m currently interning at a clinical trials site. Pretty interesting, aside from all the paper work. 🙂

No need to say “sorry”! No big deal at all! Everyone has different circumstances!

You were smart to take it at a community college this semester! I wasn’t accepted until a few weeks ago, I didn’t want to take an extra class until I knew about school! (of course looking back now, I should have taken it)

I work for a CRO and I manage clinical research trials. I was in the lab for several years, but now I manage the study from a project/business stand point! Some days are great and some not so good (like any job!).

We will have to meet up at orientation and talk pharmaceuticals! It is never boring!

Good luck with genetics!

Anyone know when classes and orientation start?

Thanks!

thats really cool. I spend the majority of my time filling out SAE report forms. Things are picking up here lately so I actually get to enroll some patients and see them through the studies. Were you ever a research coordinator? If so I have to ask you about electronic data capture compared to paper since thats what my thesis project is about. 🙂

I wasn't, but I just went through a week training on edc and from this point on all of my new studies will be with edc (of course the old ones will use the same software, but setup for a paper study!)

Feel free to ask. Or give me your email address. I can always ask the CRAs that I manage questions too.

Thanks

I'm just wondering, how do you know what classes you need to take before august? Did KCUMB send you a letter about it?

Thanks!!

hey, I'm not blackmomlab but I'll answer your question. They should tell you if you fullfill all the requirements in your acceptance letter.

BTW how many of you have framed your acceptance letter?

I had planned on it but it's actually kind of wrinkled from me carrying it EVERYWHERE with me for the first few days. I showed everyone!!!
But I would like to frame it.

Thought about doing a poster size one to hang in my room, but then realized that would be really tacky.

so the rivalry begins. 🙂

Hey guys! Do you know if KCUMB offers a group plan for us single medical students that need health insurance or do we have to find our own plan? I e-mailed someone at KCUMB, but haven't heard yet. 🙂 Excited for August!!!

I don't think they have insurance directly through the school, but I do think they have a "contract" with a private company like State Farm or something. If I remember right, he/she should be on campus during orientation.
