Univ of Cincinnati vs. Univ of Kentucky

Is there anyone out there that either goes to or are familiar with these schools as far as overall reputation of residency training?

Does anyone have an opinion on psych training at either of these places.

How about living situation. I'm reasonably familiar with Cincinnati, but do not know much about Lexington. Is it a fun town? Are there things to do outside looking at the horses?

Thanks for the help!!!

I currently go to UK. What types of fun things are you looking for? There are bars, sports, concerts, etc that go on here. It's also an hr from Louisville, hour and half from Cincy, and I think close to places in Tenn so that you can easily travel somewhere cool if you get tired of it here. I think it's fun here and pretty and safe. I live about 10 mins from campus and it is a very nice neighborhood.

As far as residencies, that is the farthest thing from my mind right now, but you could always contact current 4th yrs who would have more of an idea. Also, our dean of student affairs is a psychiatrist and he went to UK, and I believe did residency here. You could always contact him.

Dr. Cheever is a pretty cool and helpful guy.

I go to UK, too and it is a pretty good school overall. I interviewed at Cincinnati and thought they had better facilities but I can't really tell you much about it other than that. They waitlisted me and ultimately never accepted me. It would have been a difficult decision between UK and Cincinnati but I never had to make it. So, I guess I really can't help ya. There are some UC folks who roam these boards, though. They will be able to help on that end.

Hello,
yeah, we UC folks do float around, but it's test week (we are on a block schedule), and the UCII's are off on spring break (in February?!?).

Cincinnati is fantastic, the football team won the Super Bowl for the 3rd year in a row 🙂, Reds are going to win the World Series, and the Bearcats are going to graduate a player this year!

I guess it just matters what you are looking for. I love it here, but other people love their schools. The med school is just starting a new renovation of their buildings and are looking at spending 100+ million in the next 4 years. In the end it will be a new school.

As far as getting ready for rotations and PG years I think that UC is great. If you are looking at ped's and emergency med it is really hard to beat. As far as psych I have no clue.

You may want to post a specific question on the psych board under the clinical forums etc.

If you have any other specific q's feel free to ask or PM me. Wherever you go GOOD LUCK, you are going to have a fantastic time!!!!😉

I know nothing about UK but I worked in the UC pscyhiatry department for several years and interviewed at the med school. I was actually disappointed with UC, enough that at the end of the interview day, I didn't care whether I got in or not. If you liked it, though, to each his own. My impression of the pscyh residency is that it is much stronger in child and adolescent psych than adult. The adult program had about 50% FMG's when I was there- I'm not saying anything bad about FMG's or the quality of education, but since our system is so biased against FMG's, that doesn't seem like a good sign. I realize that pscyh is an uncompetitive residency, though, so maybe all but the very most competitive programs are mostly FMG's? But Children's Hospital is great- the staff and residents worked well together and seemed happy to be there.

The psych program here at UC is nothing special. Our strongest residency programs are EM and peds, as Tyson said... both are very highly regarded. Good luck with your decision!

Hello, I went to undergrad at Georgetown which is about 13 miles from UK, and I worked in Lexington at Papa John's all through undergrad. All I can say is that UK is close to the BEST resturant in the entire world...Tolly Ho's!!! Huge Double Cheese Burger, a gigantic pile of fries, and a large drink for 5.27. All you UK med students need to back me on this one. I'm serious...it is the best. I wish we had a Tolly Ho's here in Pikeville, but alas..no Super Ho Combo for me. I need to start one here in the mountains and call it Scotty Ho's.

hehe...I drive by Tolly Ho's every day on the way home from school. Since you are in Pikeville and know no good restaurants, I will give some advice ( I was after all born and raised in Pike County). My wife (also a native Pike Countian) is a total sucker for Dorsie's over on the bypass road. It is just a drive-in but it has some OK items. I didn't particularly like it, but my wife loves the place. She reccomends the dorsie burgers, which are like White Castle sized burgers. The milkshakes there rock my world though. Don't forget to try Jerry's over near the Wendy's and SuperAmerica. It is pretty OK as well. Definitely try the LandMark restaurant on top of LandMark Inn. Lots of people I know swear by it and I must admit it is pretty good.

My biggest suggestion: travel to Phelps which is about 45 minutes from Pikeville and go to Hornet's Restaurant. Try the crazy bread with cheese. Unbelievably good. Absolutely worth the drive and with you being from Lexington, you will most definitely see some scenery you haven't seen and if you make the trek with a local you will almost undoubtedly learn some new stuff about life in the area and what not. You absolutely must try Hornet's restaurant though. The best in Pike County without a doubt.
