Hey-
Insofar as PDAs go, they aren't a necessity, but a lot of students used them prior to med school so they were already in the habit before classes started. I don't think that they become extremely relevant until you hit your 3rd/4th year clinical rotations. We have a technology group called TOMA at MSUCOM and they are really into downloads, etc. I am not exactly sure of what their meetings consist of, but if you are interested, I could put you in touch with someone who can help you.
As for the laptop, I bought one because I desperately needed a new computer and thought it'd be neat to try one instead of having another desktop. There are plenty of computers available on campus, but if you are like me and need to have your own, just make sure that you have a relatively new one with a decent amt. of memory and programs that allow you to view pictures, movies, etc. You will be using computers A LOT during your first year, so be prepared to have capabilities that allow you to access this material.
If you have any other questions, please let me know!
Good luck,
Julia
