Does anyone know the status of getting a computer at Duke? Do we receive a laptop after orientation? Trying to get the big purchases out of the way and am wondering if a computer is one to factor in...

i think they factor enough to rent (not buy) a laptop into our budget. i also seem to recall that they want everyone to get Dells. It seems like its easier to use a PC there, but I believe using a Mac is doable.

anyway, unless you want a specific kind of computer or really want to own it, i bet duke is probably pretty good about taking care of the details for us.

Hey Anna - so you've decided on Duke? PM me if you'd like...

i am duke bound! where are you headed?

Wildcat---> Blue Devil??? Where's the loyalty?

Look at you two! Sellin' out to the Devil. Tisk, tisk, tisk. And to think I once had pride in my fellow Davidson grads.

Now if you had chosen a REAL school like the University of Maryland; That'd be a different story.

Seriously though,
Y'all should know that Maryland's gunna be kickin' yo' blue Ass' in Basketball as long as we're all in med school. There's no getting around that.

Anna-
Nothing Personal of course, Just trying to get the basketball rivalry started early. 😛

Lyric, you freakin' loser -
This is personal. Real personal. 😡

Hey wazup... yeah I had my heart set on Davidson College SOM, but I got waitlisted - no love from the alma mater, no love.

I think you made the right choice with Maryland - their proctology department is WAY better than Duke's, and I here their Chairman gives you patient contact from Day One...

.....yeah...well...........YOUR name is Needledick.

Ahem...now back to the question.

Duke's budget covers a laptop (mine is a Dell Latitude something-or-other), that you "rent" for two years, at the end of which you own it. Odd, I know.

The rental fee ends up being much more expensive than it would be to buy an equivalent laptop and programs out of pocket, but there are a few advantages: first, you get free repairs. Second, if your laptop gets stolen, they'll replace it for $100 during the two year "rental" period. Third, since the laptop is budgeted into your financial aid package, Duke may end up paying for most of it anyway. And oh yeah, you also get a spiffy backpack to carry it in!

Probably 90% of the class goes with this deal, the other 10% already had laptops and didn't want another one.

Let me know if you have more questions!

wow--i didn't know basketball rivalries began so early...who are you anyways?

omores, thanks for the info. i see the advantages to going with the duke deal. curious...MFA? and good klimt piece.

Yep, in painting, from School of Visual Arts in Manhattan.

Yes, it is a nice Klimt, isn't it? What I like is that this avatar crops the image to focus on Judith's deeply sensual facial expression but leaves the reason for that expression a secret. Only those familiar with the whole painting and the biblical story realize what is going on: she's just gotten Holofernes drunk and randy, then chopped off his head, which she is now holding by the hair. Tough chick.

I'm writing this on my Duke Deal laptop, and am very happy with it.

I'd like to add my 2 cents on the laptop issue, as a current first-year.

Duke tries to sell you a laptop by referring to all sorts of software that comes bundled with it, which you supposedly need but actually either don't or can buy very inexpensively from the people in the office here. For our class, the laptop was about $3000, and a number of my classmates have had problems with hard drives conking out, screens breaking, CD drives falling out, etc. To be fair, this extravagant price includes a Palm-type device too, but you don't get it until the beginning of the 2nd year, and the price tag is about $300, meaning the laptop+software+repair service is still extravagantly priced at $2700!

They peddled Dell laptops this year. They were 1.2GHz Pentium IIIM's, with 256 megs of RAM. For literally half the price, I got myself a brand new Compaq with a 1.4GHz Pentium IVM, also with 256MB of RAM, and more hard disk space. About 10% of my class opted to buy laptops on their own, and no one has had any major problems. On the other hand, I know of at least 5 people who've had major problems with the Duke Dell laptops. I honestly think these are refurbished models or defects or something, because the error rate has been strangely high. Then again, these classmates all got loaner laptops while theirs were being fixed, which is really nice.

I also heard that your grant money, assuming you're on financial aid, gets upped if you opt for the laptop deal. So it probably ends up not actually costing $3000. But I'd still caution against getting the Duke laptop.

Also, if you're buying a laptop, try to get a built-in wireless module if you can, or be prepared to buy a wireless card. We have a wireless network all over campus here (even in the Duke Gardens!), and most of our class has opted to go wireless because it's so convenient.

I just heard from someone in financial aid that the Duke laptop is REQUIRED for the incoming class... bummer, because it is truly a rip off.

Lyric_Bari, are you sure they said THE laptop, rather than A laptop? Because officially, all first years are required to have A laptop, but students were always free to buy one on their own, as long as it was as reached/surpassed certain minimum requirements regarding processor speed, etc.

Any idea what the minimum recs will be for the laptop this year? I got mine at an after-thanksgiving sale. $700 for a new toshiba with a 1.2 GHz processor and 20 gig hd.

Yep, the financial aid staff person told me that the Trustees just approved a requirement making the $3,000+ fee mandatory, so she said I would have to use, or at least have, the school computer even if I bought my own. Hmmm, getting depressed thinking of what sort of Mac I could buy with that money!!!

wow, that's really unfair 🙁 I'm sorry to hear they've made it mandatory. It could be a great thing though...since Duke has so much money for financial aid, maybe they'll make it such that every student essentially gets a free laptop, by increasing everyone's grant money accordingly. Of course, if you're not on any financial aid, you'd be out of luck. I'm not happy about that decision...I wonder why the Trustees would do that??? 😡
