Are these large managed care groups or practices making it so family and internist physicians can work more flexible hours without any call? There are 3 such clinics within an hour of me and all of them have internists/family physicians working as little as 2 days a week or as many as 5, all without any call (the call is handled by hospitalists in the hospital group).

Is this a common thing or rare anomaly?

common for employed outpatient only internal medicine/family medicine

This is becoming more common with medium to large groups regardless of who owns/runs them. And many smaller groups are contracting with hospitalist groups to admit their patients.

As to the hours you'll work in the outpatient setting, that's completely up to you. If hours are your primary concern, you can find a job that accommodates that...if you're willing to give up location and/or money. Hours/money/location - pick any 2.
