Ok, so I had an appointment with my pre-med advisor today. She did a good job of scaring the **** out of me. I went to her to get my PS proof read. Before that she talked about other aspects of my app...

All the time she kept on saying "You're awfully late in applying..", "you're awfully late.." , "You should have submitted on June 1st"
"You should think about applying for the 2006 application cycle."

I was like wtf? I know I am behind in the process, but she was making it sound as if it was the end of the world, and I would never get accepted anywhere (she even implied that). After I told her my MCAT score she said that my best bet is Chicago Med. I don't wanna go there, but I will still apply.

I was planning on getting it in by the end of June, but my PS slowed me down. I messed up my verbal section when I took the MCAT last Aug, so I'm taking it this Aug, and I had to study for that too.
Since my app isn't going to be complete until they get my new scores, and I will be able to send in all the secondaries only after the Aug MCAT, I thought a few weeks late wouldn't hurt.

Now my question is, am I screwed? I am really really :scared: :scared: :scared:

I have everything ready to go, I am just waiting for my english professor's comments on my PS.

wow, i think your advisor doesn't know what she's talking about. it is what, the second week of july? you're NOT so late that you need to wait until next year's app cycle. applying near the amcas deadline, yeah that would be late. i think you are just fine applying now so just go ahead and get that PS wrapped up and submit! :luck:

You're not late, however, I would not hesitate any longer in getting the "ball rolling", so to speak.

Make sure to have a quick turn around with your secondary applications, and what not, and you should be fine.

The only thing a premed advisor is good for, is to scare the $hit out of you. Maybe this will light fire in you to get things done.

Best of Luck, now stop reading this, close down SDN and get to finishing your application! 👍 :luck:

I agree--the schools have just started downloading AMCAS apps and sending secondaries within the last week or so, therefore you're not late! Sheesh! Just get your app in ASAP so that it can get processed and sent out. I don't know why your advisor would encourage you to apply next year--that's ridiculous! Unless you needed to make significant improvements in some area and could reasonably be expected to do so in a year...not just because you didn't submit your AMCAS on June 1! Better to submit it now with a good essay than on June 1 with a poor essay, you know? My pre-med advisor doesn't know crap either, so I've gotten to the point where I basically just don't trust anything she says. Sad and unfortunate, since it would be nice to have an advisor who could actually, you know, ADVISE me.

Good luck, don't freak out, just finish your app and get it submitted as soon as you can! 👍 :luck:

Thanks for the replies... They give me some relief now.

This is why I never go to my advisors anymore. I stopped going to them after my freshman year. Today, I just went there to have my PS proof read, and I had to hear all her BS.

I'm gonna turn in my application this week for sure. I hope my english professor emails me soon 🙂

You're not late. Your advisor is dumb. She's never been through the process.

I didn't get my application in until the end of September or first of October of last year. And I onlyl applied to like 4 allopathic schools. My secondaries were complete in November.

Now, I'm recommending you do what I did, but I made it. I got a couple of interviews too and acceptances. I'm starting med. school this fall. Many people wait until as late at Sept to submit.

Get it in ASAP...but don't listen to your advisor.
My advisor told me that I had no chance whatsoever at medical school or dental school and that I should consider podiatry. I'll be a first-year med student at Tulane in 3 weeks.

Wow... this is exactly what I need to hear... close SDN and get back to studying!!

See y'all later! (5 minutes...)

😛

i hate premed advisors. don't listen to her. if you feel like your numbers and ecs are competitive, then by all means apply! DON'T LET HER DISCOURAGE YOU! after you get accepted, you can flaunt the letter of acceptance in her face.

GOOD LUCK!

I'd recommend you get them in soon, but you're not completely screwed, and IF you do get your stuff in too late, you've gotten a lot of good practice at the process (to the tune of a couple of thousand dollars tho).

Last year, I didn't even THINK about turning in my AMCAS application until December. I got a couple of replies from schools that they wanted to interview me, but didn't have the slots left. I did get two interviews and once acceptance however.
