As you may already know, "hispanic"/"latino/a" ( ie south, central amer's, carib latinos/as) is considered an ethnicity, which includes people from many different races (ie europen/white, black, and latin amer indian etc). However, for hispanic applicants, there is no option for latin american indian as a race. Are hispanics who put "white" as their race considered URM's? Is the classification of URM for hispanics soley based on his/her ethnicity and not race?

Thanks

"Underrepresented in medicine means those racial and ethnic populations that are underrepresented in the medical profession relative to their numbers in the general population." --aamc website

I consider myself latino, both my parents are South American (Venezuelen father, Argentinian mother), but you'd never be able to tell unless I spoke to you in Spanish, you'd probably think I was German or something. My advisor told me that "Other Hispanics", the category I fit, has not traditionally been considered a URM until recently. Because of the new URM definition, quoted above, every college has a slightly different list of what is considered URM based on demographics in their area. If you want to find out for sure which colleges consider you a minority, you're going to have to call them up and ask them.

Thanks

When I was filling out my AMCAS, I noted that under the race option, I couldn't find anything to fit me other that white (there was NO hispanic option in this part, as far as I remember...i take it hispanic is thought of as an ethnicity in the eyes of AMCAS). I am from Colombia, and after a long thought about it, I thought to myself, "well, its the option that fits the best"......I am not black or Amerindian (I have very little Indian in my blood), so since my ancestors came from Europe, I guess the option is white! But, under ethnicity, I believe the hispanic option is available. I think that these schools and applications should provide more options as far as this goes.

Despite putting white on my app, I have been considered a URM by all of the schools I interviewed except for one.......this school almost rejected me, until they realized that I was a minority, and then proceeded on to interview me, and then waitlist me. Although they told me that the "white" designation threw them off a bit, I remember thinking "this mistake can't be my fault!"...I really don't remember there being any other option under race that fit me better 🙁

as far as I know, most of the top 20 med schools will only give consideration to your ethnicity/race if you are:

1) African-American
2) Mexican-American
3) Mainland Puerto Rican
4) Native American

this is because they hope to give opportunity to those groups of people who have been most oppressed/discriminated against in this country. this doesn't mean that other groups have not experienced obstacles, but these 4 have been systematically mistreated by social and public institutions for hundreds of years and have only gained equal status in the last 50 years.

if you are hispanic but are not 2 or 3, they'll notice but it honestly won't help you out in the app process with the most selective schools. the top 20 or 30 ugrad colleges (who have the resources to evaluate apps on a case-by-case basis) also operate on the same system. if you are not one of these 4 groups but have experienced serious obstacles in your life (socio-economic or other disadvantage), by all means put it on your app, bc you will get the identical extra consideration that these 4 groups get.

another important point, for all you evil affirm action trolls, is that if you are a member of one of these 4 groups but you have led an extremely privileged life, you will not get the same level of extra consideration from adcoms. i know this isn't what they write on the web page, but this is pretty much how it works. hope this helps!

You write as if you're an authority on this. Where do you get these facts. Are you aware of the new URM definition?

If you think you're white, you're treated like you're white, and are "white" then hell you are white.
