I think certain schools look for leadership moreso than others. My med school committee when I was interviewing made it seem like leadership was super important to them. So it depends really. Leadership is always a great trait to demonstrate, so if you get the chance go ahead and do it. I have found that leadership in an activity means you're usually more involved in that activity, and adcoms love seeing that you are truly dedicated to something.
