I have an interview in October at LECOM and am very interested in the PBL. Anyone attending this school willing to give me their opinion of the program, the school, or any other bits of info??

I appreciate any help!

I'm a PBLer, class of 2006. Lots of people ask this one every year, so I would do a search, there were lots of good threads around this time last year on the very same subject. Although its also good that you started it up again, bc as I understand it, there have been quite a few changes made to the program this year. So you may get some new info also...

Good luck to you!

hermione - you were in PBL? Guess what? I was in PBL too. Maybe you remember me. 😉 (Long time no see!!!)

dancote - if you have any specific questions, PM me and I'd be happy to answer them. I loved the PBL program, and I passed the boards, so something must have worked. 😀

LECOM-FL is entirely PBL and the program is run by the former PBL head at LECOM-Erie and those that set up PBL at Ohio State. We don't start our first PBL case until Friday, but it seems like it's going to be cool. In a nutshell, the first 13 weeks (10 in our case because we started late this first year) you have lecture for anatomy, including histo and embryo, your usual anatomy labs and OMM stuff, clinical exam class/lab, and your PBL group meets once a week to work on cases. After those first 13 weeks, lecture is over except for OMM and Clin Exam, and you just go to school 3 times a week to meet with your PBL group. All other subjects are incorporated in the PBL cases.

Isn't Dr. Krueger the best? I sure miss him. How did you all fare down in Florida with Ivan?

Yep, gotta say Dr. Kreuger is one of the funniest and most interesting persons I have known! You can't beat a guy who can make a class laugh during embryo lecture! Anyways, perataining to the original post, like nicedreams said, the curriculum here is entirely PBL, with a few advisors/facilitators from Ohio State. We take every course as in a routine lecture pathway with the added knowledge of gaining essential clinical experience and via integrating all those lectures towards the stated case at hand. It is a great way to prep for your clinical years and was a major key in choosing LECOM-B.

Sounds great! I really enjoyed seeing the PBL group at work when I interviewed at WVSOM. They seemed to be very motivated and enjoying their learning. I would love to participate in that kind of program. I have applied to several schools that have PBL, I have not heard from OU (yet!) but did get an interview at WV in August ( I think I got in, but the certified letter isn't here yet) and LECOM. I never hear much from folks at LECOM and wondered how the program was. I wish my state school (MSU) had the program. I am really going to have a hard time deciding between my in-state school and an out-of-state school with PBL!!!

PS-We decided that FL wouldn't work for us (my family), but it does sound like a very good program as well.

Hey, im a PBLer class of 07...i'd have to say that on the whole i really enjoy PBL. Its a great way to learn as opposed to sitting in a lecture hall day in and day out. Most of the time you are on your own to learn everything (once anatomy is over) so that does take time to get used to. But its nice to plan out your day the way you want. If I were you i would apply to LECOM's Brandenton Campus in Florida. It is entirely PBL and just opened this year. Dr. Krueger has run PBL for years and transfered from Erie down to florida this year to run the whole program. Things have been really frustrating for our class so far this year b/c we are adjusting to the new guy running everything. Honestly, he claims he has lots of pbl experience but no one is very happy with his changes and he has given some people a hard time. Its has been difficult to get our view across and have him listen. He feels that how we did things last year with Dr.Krueger wasnt the best and we are doing things his way now. If i were you....Dr. Krueger is the only way you should go...meaning go to Florida if you can. He is so great, not just as a teacher but as a person and even though its a new school he knows what he is doing and will lead you in the right direction. His philosophy is to have fun and learn. You will definitely have fun with him and everything he teaches is High Yield for the Boards...which is key. Choosing Erie (if you had the choice) woulnt be terrible, but id stick with someone who knows how pbl works and can ensure you passing the boards. Good luck! :luck:

Who took over for Krueger in Erie? I heard it might be Dr. Chegwidden.

Yep, Cheggy did. The program also was "tweeked" a bit. 🙂

Can you still attend lectures if you feel you need it-even though you opted for the PBL curriculum? 😕

Yes you can. A few people in my class do occasionally.

Thank you-I'm interviewing there next month.

P.S. Is it hard to get used to the dress code? Do you find that because everyone has to dress up-and dress conservatively-that it makes the atmosphere more "uptight?" I've never been to a school w/ a dress code, but I am pretty open minded.

It's not hard to get used to. It's annoying sometimes if I have nothing else at LECOM but some meeting at lunch and I have to get dressed up for what will be a 15 min period at school. Those times are what bother me most.

If you're PBL, you're also not in dress code as often. I stay away from LECOM when I can so I'm only in dress code maybe 3-4 times/week.

Dress code is not that hard to get used to. You find certain ways to adapt or go against the grain (bright shirts, clip ons, short sleeved shirts.) Yes, it does promote a very stuffy atmosphere. But the code is the symptom, not the disease. My personal peeve at the moment is the stupid security system, where to have to swipe your card to get in or OUT of the building. Trying to leave without swiping either sets off an alarm, or makes the big-fat rent a cop confused. But I digress. Its only two years, and not all that much time on campus since its PBL.
