I'm applying to USUHS this cycle and I need a LOA for being in the Army National Guard. I called them and they didn't sound too sure about the process for being in ANG. Has any Guardsman ever done this? I'm not sure whose signature I need: my unit commander or battalion commander or someone else?

I'm in the same boat. The instructions they sent said it needs to go to NBG for officers but doesn't say anything for enlisted. I'm not sure either way though, as I thought I read somewhere that they'll take a local commander's signature. In the end, NGB is going to have to release you if your contract runs past 30JUN17, so I figure it's better to run it down now. If you hear something, let me know!

From my understanding, Letters of Approval are for Officers. As an enlisted Soldier, you should request a conditional release on a 4187, recommend approval by Company Commander, Approve by Battalion Commander.

For enlisted Sailors, we essentially do the same thing, so that makes sense. I'm active duty, so I have easy access to admin (helpful or not).

I called them. For NG, it needs to be signed by your CO. Request for Approval to Apply and LOA both needs to be signed. Then eventually you will also need conditional release signed after you have been interviewed.

I'm NG and had my CO sign it. That worked just finet for me. My NG contract is up next Oct (2 months after school starts), so I'm 90% sure I'll have no issue getting released by my state.

I'd recommend getting it in ASAP. It might just be coincidence, but I received an II an hour after I sent my LOA, which was the last thing they were waiting on.
