I've seen talk about "letters of intent," but I'm not exactly sure what they are. I think I might have some use for them now, so I'm curious now. What are they? Why do you send them out? What do you write in them? Thanks for all the help.

A letter of intent is a letter that explicitly states that school X is your number one choice, and that you will go there if offered a place in the class.

Schools like them mostly because (a) they want a high % of their accepted students to matriculate and (b) when they use the waitlist, they'd prefer to call one person who they know will come rather than have to call a bunch of people to fill one spot

Some people will be dishonest and write more than one of these letters. It's frowned upon, and not something I personally would do, but it's a choice that's up to you.

There is also debate about how much of a difference these letters really make, since all anyone has to go off of is anecdotal evidence.

Hi. This is very interesting. I guess its not a form of practice in Canada and I am not familiar with it. I have only applied to one US school, can I write a letter of intent, to say it is my number one choice? How would I know if the uni accept Letters of Intents... I dont want to be penalized if I write one. Please advise.
