Letter of Rec from grad student I did research with?

A science professor looks over our department but a graduate student is the one who was in charge of my research team. This is the person I actually spent time with and got to know. I’ve never taken a class with the professor and she wasn’t around much. When med schools say they want a letter of rec from research can that also include graduate students you did research with?
