when the school asks for a recommendation letter from a science prof.

and doesn't specify whether he/she taught you, is it possible to get the

letter from a prof who teaches in another institution(I've done research under him during most of my summer breaks as an undergrad)

is this a bad idea? should i just ask prof in my school to write it?

thanks in advance !
