All of the above are options. Best to get the people who know you best. Undoubtedly, you would need a reference from someone who can attest to your clinical skills.

I got 5 letters of rec + institutional evaluation for perio.

One from my chairman of perio dept. He is 'famous' in the perio world for research stuff, and I think his letter is why I got interviews certain places.

one from my oral path professor. he was the advisor for a student group I was president of

one from my oral surgeon. I worked with him on a research publication that was fairly major

one from my anatomy PhD professor. I was a TA for anatomy so I had a pretty major interaction with her

one from my employer. I worked at a non-profit part time during dental school past few years, so he knows me very well. I thought a non-dental showed a cool side as well.

then the Institutional evaluation thing that the dean of the school wrote for me.

I would say most important is choosing people who actually will write a good letter and know you pretty well. not a bad idea to give them some rough thoughts on things they could include from your resume etc. have a good convo with them about the 'theme' of your app.

agreed. I would say though that all your letters do not have to be from people who you worked with clinically. definitely at least one though, preferably from a specialist in the field you are applying for

I’ve been out of school for 16 years, so I couldn’t really use faculty. I had two pediatric dentists, an oral surgeon and an orthodontist. I am in the midst of interviews for the current app cycle (pediatric dentistry residency).

And oh hey. Apparently those worked. Matched to my first choice. :)

Is a letter of recommendation from an OMFS that received training outside of US still valid?
